PogoPlu Pro for my DIY cloud?

I'll try to keep this as short as I can. I found out about something called Owncloud which will allow me to do what I use Dropbox for, on a server of my own. I am not a programmer. I contacted someone involved with owncloud who has offered to help me set things up. He said that he uses Pogoplug Pro for his server.

I searched this device and found some mixed reviews. Remember, this guy is a Linux programmer and can probably troubleshoot pretty effectively. I want a solution for my 'own cloud' that is as plug 'n play as it can be. I realize that using the command line system and Linux will be a bit of a challenge in any case. Problems with this PogoPlug seem to center around printing remotely and unreliable media streaming and browsing. I only need to access my files remotely at this point, but I would also like to be able to print. I want to be able to access files from my iPhone 4.

My first question is - does anyone have any experience with this unit?

My second question is this. The guy who's helping me mentioned that there are other ways to set this up using a program other than Apache, something that will provide a more familiar looking interface. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get this set up, given that I'm a fairly tech savvy non-programmer? I am aware that Windows has a built in FTP function and that this can be used for the same thing, although I believe that functionality is limited to just a Dropbox like file sharing ability (no printing, etc).

Any comments are appreciated. I hope my questions are clear.

What exactly do you want to do? Do you want to run Pogoplug the software or take Pogoplug the hardware and hack it to run ownCloud?

If you just want to run Pogoplug software there's a free version you can download and run on a desktop (I have it running on my file server), you might want to try that out first to see if it fits your needs before spending money on a Pogoplug Pro. If you are just interested in the hardware, I would suggest getting a pink or grey Pogoplug (v1 or v2, the newest ones use the same hardware as the Pro) instead as the Pro uses a different chip that isn't well supported, it hasn't been rooted so you end up running Linux in chroot. If you haven't seen it, http://archlinuxarm.org/ is a great resource.

I don't have experience with that model, but I do have a hacked Dockstar (same internals) that I run a small web/torrent/backup/print server on. Installing Linux wasn't that much different from installing it on anything else (the first few steps of backing up the firmware is about it), the website I listed above has very detailed instructions.

I've run across ownCloud a few times, sounds interesting, keep us updated if you end up going that route. I'm thinking of picking up a few extra Pogoplugs, they are fun to play with🙂
