I went to a local place for dinner with friends last night (Cafe Deux Soleils on Commercial Drive), and stayed for the "anarchist poetry slam".

Man, what a riot it was. The word play and literary devices were brilliant and delivery was solid from pretty much all the performers. Subject material involved nature, the Downtown Eastside, revolution, masturbation jokes and social justice.

In one act, one girl kissed the other girl pretty passionately while the other played the guitar. And one guy performed his poetry buck naked, then casually threw his jeans and shirt back on and went back to the audience :D.

The headliner, Electric Jon, was some crazy white guy from Winnipeg who wore a Jets hat and slammed/semi-rapped about Canadian culture (...look at the stars, hockey bag full of VCRS), did a bit of beatboxing and ranted off against the DEA, Stephen Harper, etc.

Here's a sample of Electric Jon (Language possibly NSFW)

Awesome time. I will definitely be going again.

So, who's been to a poetry slam, and how did you like it?

Excellent! Be it music, poetry, theater or the $10 back alley blowjob, there is a cornucopia of underrecognized talent performing across the length and breadth of this fantabulous continent we call North America.

I went to a couple poetry slams last year. They were fun. I am not a poetry fan AT ALL but even I enjoyed them! Some people criticize them for pandering but I say bring it on. It was a fun way to enjoy poetry without too much pretentiousness.

Awesome! There were definitely some strong political messages being expressed, but I agree, the performers don't take themselves too seriously. They're there to entertain and to have fun themselves.

I'm a long published, life-long "serious" poet, and while, yes, there is some dumbing down of nunanced content in favor of flashy rap performance in poetry slams, I'm all for them!

Enjoying the power of the spoken word, by any means possible! ;)

As a so-called and self-named "serious" poet, though, I have always held that poetry is an aural art, and needs to be spoken and heard, not just lie there passively on the page like some dissolute ivory tower whore.

So, YEAH, let the inherent musicality in the lovely spoken cadences of the glorious English language ring loud and proud and free!

Did you guys know that the English language contains TWICE as many words in it as any other language on the face of this good, green Earth!

May the language of the Bard roll down onto the multitudes, standing agape in awe at it's mellifluous and majestic beauty!
