PocketPC 2003 on existing Pocket PC's

i have an iPaq 3955, which i'm sure is more than capable of running PPC2003. does anyone know if Compaq will be releasing a new rom with 2003 , or if Microsoft will be selling it as a retail OS? thanks.

There was an article about this on pocketpcthoughts.com the other day...apparently PPC2003 is a major rewrite and a lot of existing software will not run under it. It's based on the CE.NET kernel (I believe) with enhancements for XScale and what-not. So, unless that story was wrong, chances are they won't release ROMs for older devices. That's the problem with devices like handhelds: it's much harder to upgrade the OS.

well, the 3955 is has an XScale 400 mHz processor with 64 MB of ram, so it should run the CE.Net kernel with no problem. i guess we'll all just have to see.

It's not to say that the hardware can't handle it, but there is a debate on whether existing software will be able to run on it. If 90% of existing applications will not function under 2003 then I highly doubt you'll see many OEMs offering upgrades, because it would cause too many headaches from users who flash their system only to discover they can't use any of their software anymore.

well, regardless i hope they offer it, as i basically only use the damn thing for MP3's, calendar and alarm clock functions. i remember, however, the compaq offered PPC2002 for the original iPaq, so there is hope that they will offer 2003 for the slightly old iPaqs.

Yes, HP is sure to offer a 39**, 38**, and 54** series update. They had a release schedule somewhere, but I can't find it.
