Ok, so even though nothing went the way it the manual said, I managed to set up my D-Link DWL-1000AP access point. I can get the laptop working fine with a Linksys WPC11 v2.5 wireless card. Now I'd like to be able to connect my @migo w/ Pocket PC 2002. Every attempt to get internet access on the @migo has failed. I haven't been able to get passthrough working right while it's sitting in the cradle. I can get the wireless connection to the point where the indicator on the @migo says I have a link established and I am receiving packets. I can also connect to the Avantgo server (not that I really want to). But I can't connect to the internet. I've fiddled with the work/internet settings till I felt like smashing the thing to bits, but still no go. Help please:(

Compaq iPAQ w/ PC Card sleeve
Using Orinoco Gold.

My settings: All set to Work
Make sure proxy is turned off in Work
Make sure IP settings are set correctly on the adapter (located under Settings->Network Adapters->your adapter brand->Properties)

What exactly is "set correctly"?
Either set for dynamic addressing (DHCP), or configured with static addressing info.

Is your wireless AP connected to a router or to another computer using windows ICS?

I had similar problems with my wireless setup using desktop windows XP ICS, the DWL-1000AP and an IPAQ 3635 running PPC 2002.

My problem was that my IPAQ couldn't resolve any dns names to webpages... Basically it couldn't find www.cisco.com by just typing it in. It could find it when I typed in the IP of www.cisco.com (198.133.219.35).

Try the following, one step at a time until your problem is resolved.

First, go into your connections settings on the ipaq (start -> settings -> connections -> connections) Make sure "My netowrk card connects to:" is set to Internet Settings (you will need to switch it back to "work" to wirelessly sync with your desktop). Make sure your desktop/laptop can get onto the net, then try and surf with the IPAQ. Does it work?

Second, pick a popular site (www.cisco.com was my choice) and ping it. Make sure your desktop is online and then on your desktop click start -> run then type "command" and press enter. When you get the dos like command screen type "nslookup xxxxxxx" where xxxxxxx is the website name (www.cisco.com). This will return the IP address that xxxxxx points to (www.cisco.com = 198.133.219.25). Now enter that IP address into the navagation bar of your IPAQ and press the go button. Does that work? If yes try the next thing.

Third, make sure your IPAQ is getting out to the net. This may require you to define the gateway IP, and the DNS server. Back on your desktop (still online) in the same command dos like thing from the above step type "ipconfig -all". Locate the DNS server name. Go back to your IPAQ. Click start -> settings -> connections -> newtwork adapters and then select your adapter. On one of the tabs is a place to enter the DNS server. Make sure that is correctly entered. Also, make sure you have entered the proper gateway (the IP of your ICS machine or of the router).

Hope that helps.

I am behind a Netgear RT314. I can't access any ip address, except for my own ftp server on the lan.

Sounds like you need to setup the IPAQ to figure out what the gateway device IP address is (the IP address of the router) and the DNS server number. After entering those in the configuration try again (as I said above).

Another question... Can you sync the IPAQ wirelessly?

Well first of all, to avoid any confusion, I don't have an Ipaq. Someone else who replies has an Ipaq. As I said in the original post, I'm using an @migo made by URThere. So under the network card config screen, I should set the gateway to my router (192.168.0.1)? I don't need to specify anything about the access point? The more info the better. I know a little about networking, but not enough to be specifying dns servers, nameservers, etc. Thanks.

Depends whether your access point is set to bridge or route (if it has a route function).

If it is set to route, set your AP IP as gateway.
If it is set to bridge, set your router as gateway.

If I understand properly you have the following setup:

Cable/DSL to Router
Router to Access Point (dwl-1000AP)

If that is the setup then your gateway for your amiga is the router. Since all requests to the internet have to go through it. The access point is just a wireless hub.

So set the gateway to the 192.168.0.1 (or whatever it is) of the router.

How can I tell what mode it's in? The access point wasn't a simple setup to begin with. Nothing that was supposed to be automatically configured worked. I had to set up the mac address and ip manually. Even then, the ip address keeps changing because I don't think I can set up a static dhcp table on my router. One thing I do notice, is that my @migo does get its own ip address. I just have no internet functionality.

The DWL-1000AP does not have the ability to be a router.

Some of the D-Link products are wireless routers. If you get into the setup of those you can actually turn off the routing function.

The DWL-1000AP is a access point only. Basically a wireless hub. It has no routing capability.

What exactly are dns services? How do I check I can get anything other than by going to PIE and punching in a couple websites? Let me repeat. Pretend I know squat about networking:)

DNS (or domain name service) is a service that takes a web address like www.anandtech.com and performs a lookup to convert that into the actual IP address that your browser actually uses to connect with the site.

In a nutshell....

NO DNS = NO INTERNET

In roughly the same spot where you entered your gateway address, there should be another tab at the top. Clicking that tab will show you a spot to enter both primary and secondary DNS servers.

TallGeese is ecactly right. One way to test if it is functioning I posted previously.

My problem when I first tried to get my wireless running was that I could punch in the true IP and get a website but the www.xxxxx.com didn't work. I wasn't getting any DNS service. So I had to punch that in.

In that case, no it's not just the dns server. I can't get a website to load using neither domain names nor ip's.

Is the wireless card set to connect to "The Internet" on the amiga?

And even though it doesn't matter... Is the active sync set to pass through to "The Internet" as well?
