PO delivers postal money order to wrong address

My wife made a deposit on some rabbits; sent $150 money order, certified mail. Postman at the other end remembered delivering it - to the wrong house! The people at the wrong house went ahead and cashed it. (The address had the intended recipients name on it, the money order had the recipients name on it.)

This ought to be a load of fun (sarcasm) for the next couple weeks... she already had them start a trace on the money order. The person on the other end is working with her post office (they admitted to sending delivering it to the wrong address.) Apparently, from the person selling the rabbits, the house he took it to was about the worst house possible for something like this.

so they cashed a postal money order in someone lese name? that's probably a federal offense. Call your local postal inspector and have him do the work.

Yep, sounds like someone is going to get some FPMITAP time.

If cashed at the PO they are supposed to get your drivers license but at mine they often skip that and just cash it. Going through a bank is easy to track since they can't deny that they deposited.

Yes, special rabbits: English lops (registered), excellent pedigrees (grandmother of one was the national champion). Ughhhh, now my wife is going to have to join 2 or 3 rabbit associations (we're already members of two different goat associations, as well as the American Livestock Breed Conservancy).

Here are some nice pics of English lops: here
I kinda cringed when I saw what the wife is spending... I can purchase rabbits by the dozen for under $3 each (often 50 cents to a dollar each.) Oh well, there are waiting lists all over the place... hopefully she can enter a few shows, win a few ribbons, sell a few babies, and make some money in the process. I'm still sorta working with the Flemish giants (huge rabbits), but unfortunately, the females weren't horny and decided to kill my only male instead of breed a few months ago.

There's a trace being run on the money order now... we're hoping for the best. At the least, I believe the package has a default insurance of $100. However, we're hoping to recoup the entire amount (or all but the fees.)

Federal offense FTW! More than one! Using the post office to commit a crime is a federal offense in itself, isn't it? Now... whose name did they sign? Their own, or your wife's? Cause if they signed her name, forgery is an additional crime.

Keep us posted. I am interested to see where this goes.

These aren't related to "the" white rabbit of Monty Python fame, are they?

That's what I thought... My initial reaction was "oh great... someone's trying to scam us out of some money." But, all her credentials checked out, so it didn't make sense. She contacted us first saying that the rabbits we had reserved will be put back up for sale because she hadn't received the deposit. An hour or so later, what actually happened had been determined. Now, it's just a matter of all the people at the post offices verifying everything. No proof yet that the money order was cashed. I'm not sure if that's better or worse - if it's not cashed, then after 60 days, we get our money back. If it's cashed, then it's a whole can of worms with the people who cashed it - no clue how everything is supposed to work out in that case.

That entire website gave me the shivers. I cant believe that people have that much time/money/energy invested in animals. Anyways, sucks to hear about the MO. Hopefully things turn out ok. I've never had a problem with one.

well... the latest news is that the money order reappeared - in someone else's mailbox. The mailman discovered it while delivering mail. I don't know the details of whether it was in the envelope still or if the envelope was opened, or whatever... All I was told is that the mailman found it in the other box; he specifically remembers handing it to a woman at the other address. Maybe someone tipped off those people that charges can get pretty serious when the PO is involved.

So, we get our money back, minus the $5 fee for tracing the money order (to see if/where it was cashed.) I believe there's a stop on the money order now, so it's uncashable... that's yet one more hassle to deal with. Now, we've gotta see if we get the certified mail fee back. The breeder is satisfied that we're serious about paying for the rabbits, so that end is taken care of. We can just pay her in full when we pick them up.

Yeah, I used to be a big fan of USPS, until they started delivering three packages that I had ordered to the wrong address, weeks before I was going to SE Asia, and blaming my landlady. Took a LONG time to figure out what was going on, and I never did get all the packages. Ended up having to spend twice as much to buy local. Did they ever admit the problem/try to make it right? Nope.

The package is automatically insured for $100; why waste the extra to insure the last $50? You'd think that certified mail would get to the correct address. I really don't know wtf happened at the other end; I'd have loved to see some federal pwnage, but I'm happy to simply not be out much money.
