I was affixing a stamp to a letter going to a po box at the local post office and since it may be slightly overweight (6 pages), it got me thinking. Do I even need to put a stamp on this thing if I bring it over there myself? All they gotta do is stick it in the right box. Geez... maybe if it is slightly overweight they'll let me get away with it?

No. It will go from your post office to the mail sorting center, (often in a different city) where it will be run through the system...weighed, and if overweight, either returned to sender...or held for payment of postage due.

Unless you have connections within the local PO; they will follow procedures.

While the locals may catch the fact that the item does not need to leave the building; you can not count on it.

If you are cheap, better for you to stake out the target PO Box and had the item to the courier when they empty the box.
