PNY Geforce4 TI4400 and Abit KR7A incompatible?? Really driving me nuts.

I originally had this system working, then I started having problems, and my power supply died. When I got a new one the problems werent fixed. I would boot up, and get no video, only a combination of red, green, blue, and yellow pixels all over the screen. It worked with my other video card, and my Geforce4 worked in my other system, except that the KR7A and radeon together gave me incorrect memory count and cpu speed, and I constantly got CMOS checksum errors. I sent the KR7A back, and got my new one today, and sure enough, it only works with the Radeon 32mb, and my Geforce4 only works in my other system. The CMOS checksum errors are gone though. Is there any way to fix this freakin compatibility issue so I can finally get my computer back? All help very much appreciated.

Check this link for information on your motherboard. Maybe you can find some solution to your problem.

Have you checked to make sure that your video card works in another mb? Just a thought. Good luck. 🙂

How about some more system specs? I have a KX7-333R, and a Radeon 8500, and they work great with an Enlight 300 watt standard PSU/case. The only really incompatable ATI card I know of is the 7000 series. I have also tried a 7500 in several systems, and the only problem I have had with it, was an old ALI socket 7 motherboard, that has known AGP problems.

Edit: I just read the link that bigboxes had, and there were some interesting bios settings recommended for Nvidia cards that may help (great site for KR7 MB owners) Here is the specific page url I found:http: //www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/video.htm

Only thing I could find was to possibly set the AGP driving control to DC or DE, but I dont know if it will help.

System:
Athlon XP 1900
Abit KR7A
PNY Geforce4 TI4400
Crucial 256mb PC2100
40GB Maxtor 7200rpm
50x CD-Rom
Antec TRU430 PSU

Yes I did try the video card in a different system and on a different monitor, works fine.

KR7A and GF4 problems... sounds familiar🙂. Go to advanced settings, then PCI settings then disable PCI burst caching ( or anything that sounds familiar).

When you say "anything that sounds familiar", does that mean anything that sounds like PCI burst caching? Or just, anything that sounds familiar to me that might be a problem?

I'm sorry, let me clarify, "if it sounds like". Better yet, you can list the BIOS options (advanced chipset settings, PCI settings) and I can tell you what to disable.

Ok, I will list them in a few minutes. Although it doesnt seem like that could be the cause, considering these are all the default settings, and when I first got the old motherboard, it worked fine.

Did you update the bios? If you have, then the default settings could have changed. If not, then maybe you need to update to remove this bug. Either way, just post your bios settings that is similar to RanDum72's PCI burst caching so that you all can try that option.

I actully just downgraded my BIOS, b/c Abit had the newest one on this mobo and it wasnt working, so I put on an older BIOS that I knew worked with my video card for a while. On the newest version (9n), there is something called PCI master caching, but it was already disabled. Nothing else is similar.

EDIT: I should also add, that on the older BIOS that I just put on there (6g), PCI master caching isnt there.

Update to the latest bios again (9N) and give that a try, it seems to me that there was a fix in there for the geforce 4 cards.

Here's my KR7A settings that worked with my GF4 (also PNY):

Under Advanced Chipset /CPU and PCI:

PCI master caching disabled
PCI master time-out disabled
MAster read priority rotation disabled
PCI 1and 2 master 0 wait state write disabled

Under Advanced Chipset/AGP and P2P:
AGP read sync. disabled
AGP fast writes disabled

Under Advanced BIOS:

APIC mode disabled

Yeah version 9n was released on 6/7/02.

Vicvonglahn, I had 9n installed and it didnt work, but 6g doesnt work either, so I will switch back. This probably sounds stupid, but is there any possibility that my 9n file is different than yours?

Well I called Abit tech support, and they told me to try to increase I/O voltage. That didn't help, so they think its just an incompatibility. I have heard of this problem many times, but it was mostly with the KT7A board. I have called PNY to find out if its the Video Bios, but I had to leave a message, and they haven't called me back yet. (Last time I left them a message it took 3 1/2 months) Although, it doesnt seem likely that the video bios is to blame, because the video card works with my other motherboard. I guess I get to sell one of these parts, and I will probably seel the video card, because taking the motherboard out is a lot more work. Anyone in the market for a hardly used PNY Geforce4 TI4400?

Yes, memory and power supply were the first things I tried. What card do you guys suggest to get. I would like a Radeon 9700Pro, but I will definetly have to wait for the price to come down. I want something with really good IQ.

tdas2: What brand is your TI4200?

Personally, I would get rid of the board. That particular board has many issues with different hardrware, like GF4 and Audigy. I'm just tolerating mine's right now because it seems to be behaving properly. Try another chipset like nforce or SIS 745 and you will be surprised by the LACK of problems. These boards are also affordable, MSI's 745 based board runs around $65 and Abit's nforce board is around $80-90 (with RAID, sound and LAN).

Well I called PNY today, and the guy was pretty suprised when I told him that all of the parts worked fine, just not together. He said that if the board is still good with another system, there is nothing he can do. SO I called Abit again to find out what the heck I am supposed to do with this motherboard. The tech support guy was giving me crap because "the KR7A has been tested with the Geforce4." Even though I have read many internet forums where people have had the same problem as me with the KT7A board. So he told me to contact the RMA department to find out if I can indeed trade my KR7A with a working one like the NForce board. I sent them an email, and will let you guys know what happens when I get it back. If they dont let me trade for a good motherboard, I am selling it and never buying an Abit product again. They make good stuff at a really great price, but I am sick of their lousy tech support. Now I just have to decide what to get. I was thinking of either an Nforce board (although I dont want onboard anything), or the Epox version of the KT333.

The speed should be roughly the same. Some reviews say the other one is faster and another would say otherwise.
Some motherboards with the nforce (415, without the built-in VGA):

Asus A7n266-C $105 over at Newegg shipped (no LAN but has sound)
MSI K7N415 pro around the same price (LAN, sound included)
Abit NV7-133R $90 (this has the most options like RAID, LAN and sound)
Leadtek K7N415DA around $98 shipped (LAN, sound)

I have never heard if Leadtek motherboards are any good. Has anyone had experience with them? I think my first choice though would be the Asus. Still no reply from Abit about my RMA.

Well Abit RMA said that they didnt think I could return it because it does "work." Right now I am using both systems, with switched video cards until I can get a new mobo. Any more recommendations?
