Hey I just sold this card to my friend and he says it can't play Halflife 2, but his mx 420 can, is there a problem with this card or is ita software problem ? I don't think the mx is better than my fx but let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks.

Yeh I told him to update the drivers, but the fx verto 5200 would defently be able to run half life 2 right ? Not fast, but he said he can't even get into the game said something about direct x and hardware malfunction or something like that. Is it a shader problem ? I thuoght a 5200 could run it.

Maybe he's trying to manually force quality modes that it doesn't support in HL2. It should run about like your gf4mx, but he might ne trying to force dx9 goodness.

I don't know about HL2, but my PNY5200 Ultra runs BF2 w/ low settings well so i'd say HL2 should run too, does he have enough memory and fast enough CPU?

5200 should run HL2 at lowest or Dx8 settings, since my old PCI PNY 5200 would do it (barely of course). Can he change the settings via commands in the Launch Preferences for Hl2 in steam?

I also have a PNY PCI 5200 (for about another week), and it's really a horrible card in my opinion. I've gotten to the point that I can't even stand to play the newest games on it because it is unbearably choppy. From what I've read, the FX cards weren't really optimized for DX9 as much as stretched for. Even low-level 9000 series Radeons demolish most of the FX cards in DX9 applications. There is actually a comparison around here somewhere... I haven't found a way to force DX8 on any games I have yet, but in KoToRII and FarCry, I set everything to minimum and still get that choppiness. Anyone know how to set up these games to run right? Well, I'm getting an x800xl this weekend anyways, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Anyways, try running in DX8 mode, that should solve the problem. Sorry if I've rambled abit.
