PNY FX5700LE + Dell4600 = problem

Hi everyone,

I just got a PNY GeForce FX5700LE from CompUSA and tried it on my Dell 4600 systems. Both of them had problems after a couple minutes. The whole screen gets bright stripes, and the stripes are inverted in a little box that follows the mouse movement. The only way to recover from this is to reset. After rebooting it happens again right after getting to the desktop or a few minutes afterwards. I went in to safe mode an uninstalled the software, then tried 3 different driver versions including what was on the install disk, 61.77, and 66.93. I checked the heatsink after shutting down and it was only mildly warm to the touch.

The PNY website doesn't have any troubleshooting section or forums, just a PNY tech support number, but they're only open on weekdays. I'll try callingCompUSA next. Any ideas shy this is happening? Is it very common?

Opps' forgot to mention:
Dell 4600
P4 2.8
512 DDR
on board sound
firewire card
dell PCI modem
DVD-RW
WinXP SP1
zone alarm
Norton AV

It could be a heat issue, I saw somewhere that Dell 4700 owners are having problems adding in a better (and hotter) card to that system.

Running with the side cover off might make a difference, but in some case designs this actually makes airflow worse.

You might also check the Dell support site to see if there is a newer BIOS for the motherboard.

If it is heat, putting in a "slot fan" in the PCI slot next to the card might help. Cyberguys.com sells these, possibly also SVC.com, newegg.com, directron.com

Dave,

Thanks for the input. I've run some more trials and figured out that it is not heat. The card is really cool in operation, slightly warmer than room temp. I've updated all my drivers (bios, chipset, audio, video) and it hasen't helped. I can get it to run for an extended period as long as I don't use SageTV and don't enter a game. Rise Of Nations, Warhammer 40K, and Lords Of Everquest all get me the striped screen after a few seconds.

I've played the Dawn of the Dead DVD with no crashes and I'm typing with the card in the system right now butthe reason I baught the card is for the power...

sorry may sound stupid but sen it done on numerous occasions, did you uninstall the old drivers fro whatever was there?
