folks, just got my new pny 6800 gt card, sadly haven't been able to play yet (pc acting flaky recently, time for a new os install), but one thing i've already noticed is how bloodly loud the fan is. i had a zalman fanless cooler on my ati 9800 and loved it - any alternative cooling solutions for the 6800gt out yet?

The VGA silencer came out with versions that will fit on on 6800 series
look them up at newegg....but they're quite pricey though

price is no object ... but they've still got a fan. can't see how it can help much!

It's a big fan that spins much slower than the smaller ones on the retail HSF. I doubt you could get away with fanless cooling on a GT, so your best bet is a huge HSF with a large, slow-spinning fan. The VGA Silencer does this well--at least, the first generation did. I haven't seen many reviews of this second generation series (with a line for nV cards), mainly b/c it's brand new.

Totally can understand that. I have been hoping that Zalman will come out with a solution for the new gen cards. Even if I could go without a fan for 2d and a quiet fan for gaming - that would be great.

water cooling good ....

but it still takes a fan to cool the radiator - and a pump.

think i'll just wait and see what zalman comes up with ...

Exactly. Watercooling can often be louder than slow-fan solutions. Plus it's much more of a hassle, more work, etc.

I'd wager that pretty much all fanless cards are louder than cards with fans, actually.

my case is pretty quite - previously NO fan on the vid card, panaflos for intake and outflow, BIG zalman fan turned way down on the CPU, quite thermaltake psu w/fans turned down.

probably doesn't help that right now i've got the case opened either. maybe it'll be a lot more quiet once i put the side back on.

If you had the Zalman, you are used to total silence. So any noise at all, your going to notice. I have the PNY 6800GT and I can barely hear it at full load.

The new AC VGA Silencers are like 18dBs. Typing your response to this thread will make more noise.

hmm the only thing in my case I can hear is my GT. Its not loud but I can hear it. I don't mind it when gaming obviously my speakers are turned up much louder than the noise of the fan though haha.

And he can't stand that Childs! The EXPLOSIONS of his fingertips POUNDING on the keyboard! It's like WW3 at Joecool's house!

What a trivial, pointless thread.

Dude, if the fan on a 6800GT seems "loud" and "annoying" to you, I hope you live in a bubble at the bottom of the ocean. The 6800GT is what's known as "quiet" in the modern world. If you don't like the trade off of that tiny bit of noise I say "why do you have a 6800 GT anyway?".

Must not be for gaming- every game I've ever heard is a cacaphonous racket compared to a 6800s fan?

I think you posted this because you wanted to argue about your quiet case you obviously put some though into.

I wish you'd buy my 5800Ultra- you'd know what "loud" is then.

yes, when i play games i don't hear the case 'cause the game is plenty loud ...

however, i do a lot of other things with this machine too:
surf the web
manage family finances
photoshop
edit home movies into dvds
telecommute to work
etc etc etc

for most of these tasks my office is relatively quiet and i'd like to keep it that way. it's also nice when my wife comes in if we don't have to raise our voices OVER the computer.

so, no, i'm not trying to brag about my quiet case, just hoping someone else likes quiet computing and has found a fix for the 6800 fan.

sorry to hear about your blow drier - one of many reasons i never bought that particular card!

I've become somewhat of a noise nazi over the last few months, and the new VGA silencers should do the trick. My Seasonic Super Tornado is one of the quietest power supplies made, and they are rated at 22dB. Anyless less than that is essentially silent, because ambient room noise is at that level. The old VGA Silencers are so quiet I couldnt even tell if it was on and had to use dental floss dangling near the exhaust port to make sure. The new ones supposedly better. I'm just waiting for the price to drop a bit, but I'm cheap that way.

I own a GF2, GF3, 5800U, 6800NU, and 6800GT. I also have a totally silent Voodoo Banshee+SLI rig.

I don't know- I went to rock concerts and drove muscle cars growing up. I still crank "Aenima" in my truck at times.

If it ever gets to the point I consider the fan on my 6800GT "loud" I'll wave good bye to the family and check myself in to Shady Acres rest home. It's just not "loud" and I hope to God I'm never 1/10 that sensitive.

To each his own I guess.

Out of curiosity, do you sleep in the same room as your PC? Even though I'm in a server room most of the day when I sleep I like things quiet. :)

I sleep two floors away from my PC, which is turned off anyway.

Rollo is an idiot. Yes the fans on the 6800GT's are loud except for the Leadtek versions. Slapping a new NV4 Artic Silencer on it will do the trick nicely; and exhaust all that hot air out of the case.

In summary, don't listen to Rollo.
