PNY 4400: wrong card in box

I just brought home a PNY 4400 from Best Buy. The card inside is most definitely not a GeForce 4, and has no markings to even indicate it is a PNY card. There is a code on the bracket I think might be a model number. It reads GB00101. I haven't been able to find anything on the net about this at all. The box was shrinkwrapped. The cardboard holding the card in place seemed to be intact. There is a PNY booklet inside, but it is non-specific and depicts GF3 cards. There is a CD titled "nVidia 3d stereo" and nothing else. Does anybody have any information that will help with this?

Thanks for your help.

Could be that someone played the old buy something from Best Buy, put something else in the box, return it saying "Oh it works, I just changed my mind", Best Buy re-shrinkwraps it and resell it game.

I dropped the last digit off of that model number and did a google search. It appears to be a Creative Labs GF2 GTS. Guess that means I need to deal with best Buy rather than PNY. Why do I have the feeling they won't believe me.

:Q oh my God I've heard horrer stories about best buy but this tops out them all. That's horrible! Crazy, crazy, crazy.

It's actually fairly common, Best Buy, Compusa, whatever. The people handling returns rarely know what they are looking at. Some rude person decides his GF2 wasn't fast enuf and played a switch-a-roo.

I second that. When I saw you say "GB00101" it instantly reminded me of my Creative Labs GF2 GTS. I say you take it back to Best Buy & demand a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 for $129 😉.

This was the last 4400 they had. I'll call in the morning. I'm willing to be civil and work with them to fix this if they are. Hmm...the card is still in the plastic...wonder if it might have prints on it....

🙂 Oh yeah... I remember that thread. How'd that go anyway?

I bought 2 Maxtor Hard Drives from BB once. Both were shrink wrapped. I took them home & opened the 1st one-1 20gig hard drive. When I started to open the second one I knew something was up when I couldnt open the box-it was glued shut(Ive bought several maxtor hds & none of them had glued boxes). After some wrangling I got it open & low & behold I was holding a car equalizer(& a junk one at that). Man was I pissed. After closer inspection of the shink wrap you could tell it was different than the shink wrap on the 1st box. I figure somebody glued it shut & returned it hoping the BB employee would give up trying to inspect it if the box seemed sealed. Then BB re-shrinkwrapped it & put it back on the shelf. I had somebody with me when I opened them so I went back to BB with him & after a heated exchange got a replacement drive. That was over 2 years ago & I have never set foot in that store again. -Its their loss, I used to spend $250-500 a month there.

Check the pics here, click "next image" and if you see the same thing as yours then you got the right thing. You were right about it not being a PNY card, because all PNY video cards are made by MSI. Why don't you pop it into your PC and run it, it should easily verify if it's a GeForce4 or not.

Please tell me that's just a joke, and it's never actually happened? :Q

According to the guy that posted it in "hot deals" claims it did happen to him. He didn't handle the issue very well though.

Ive never heard about the box of sand, but our Best Buy that I work at had a CD burner returned with a block of wood inside. Personally, when I bought my Audigy and I got it home, I found some old SCSI card inside instead and all the CDs that came with it had been replaced with blanks. I have also had a copy of quake 3 that I bought end up being a box with no CD in it and the seal had been carefully re-pressed.

P.S. Its not that we are all incompetent at Best Buy, its that its invariably the 16 year old girl who knows nothing about computers who ends up taking the return. Also, the reason that there seems to be such a lack of knowledge in the computer dept is that its very difficult to fill such a dept with enough warm bodies period. Half the guys in there were just kinda shoved in there because we needed more people at the time.

One of the reasons to always always always always pay with a credit card when you buy things at BB, Compusa, .......

Hmm, still can't believe people still remember that, well the whole story is that I bought a Ipaq and when I got home it was box full of sand, after 3 weeks and a buncha talking with the manager and a complaint filed at the BBB and the FTC and Fox news, I finally got my money back. I still got a picture of it...sand...

I bought an exhaust valve for a Lycoming aircraft engine for $248 and when I got it to the shop there was a rock in the box.

Hahaha, you were pissed for a week and I enjoyed it 🙂

So when you bought the GF4, were you thinking you bought a totally new PNY GeForce4 or did you grab it from the Used Bargain Bin?

If you bought the PNY GF4 thinking it was going to be a new boxed product and you got an opened and repackaged boxing, then I despise BestBuy.

Man, that's f@cked up. I bought a Creative 12mb V2 once from CircuitCity. When I got home and opened it up, the box was actually empty except for several pages ripped out of a phone book to give the box a bit of weight. Some a-hole had taken the card out, re-shrink wrapped it, and then taken it back for a return. 'Cause it looked unopened, they put it back on the shelf. I was lucky in that the store manager actually believe my story and refunded my money.

Remembering the sand story, whenever I buy anything from any of these stores I go right over to the empty counter and open it. They dont like it very much but what the heck.
Bleep
