So I woke up this morning with terrible chest pains and a fever. The doctor said that I have pnuenomia. Has anyone had this and what is it like. I am supposed to leave to Colorado tomorrow morning for a week long trip of skiing at Vail, Breckenridge, etc. So what are the chances that i'll be able to leave Sunday or Monday to go skiing??? Thanks

Slim to none probably. Pneumonia is not something you want to screw around with, even if you're young and healthy.

Why? It's not an STD, what are you going to do with that information?

Did your doctor do any tests or just diagnose you randomly? Your OP makes it sound like he diagnosed you over the phone. Usually they will x-ray your chest to find it. At least they did for me when I had it (3 times in my life).

He gave me a chest x-ray and did some blood work and came up with diagnosis from there. I know its not someones direct fault but I am gonna miss a trip that has been planned for about a year.

And yet you were wondering whether you could go on a plane and spread the illness to a bunch of other people...

I had pneumonia a few years ago and was in hospital for 7 days with a high fever and taking antibiotics intravenously for the whole 7 days there and 7 days after discharging. I am guessing there are degrees of severity.

I had it one time. The worst thing I remember was that when I went to the doctor the first time, he said it might be pneumonia, but I would have to come back in several days so they could reevaluate the symptoms to make absolutely sure it was pneumonia. The reason for this was apparently if they give you the medicine used for treating pneumonia and you don't really have it, it can make your condition worse.

The treatment was simply to take 1 pill every day for 7 days straight. After the 7 days I felt much better, but it was still about another week and a half before I really felt normal again.

That sounds bogus to me. Don't you just take regular antibiotics? My doctor often tells me to ride out illnesses for several days because they are probably viral and not bacterial. But pneumonia?

My son had pneumonia this past winter... he was coughing for 2 weeks prior to being properly diagnosed, home from school a week after that, and felt "punky" for 2 weeks after that.

Total... 5 weeks of illness. However I assume that a quicker diagnosis would have shortened this time somewhat.

I once had it for a month. But it was over christmas break, and I was a kid. Of course, having pneumonia on christmas is not great. But the unexpected benefit was that my mom was willing to run all over town to get me a toy that I wanted to buy with christmas money. I doubt she would have done that if I hadn't been sick.

Of course, that one act spoiled me for the rest of my life and now I expect to have anything I want.
