PMs for new members

Would it be possible to have the default behavior be to have PM'ing enabled when you first join? Its kinda hard to tell someone to enable pm's after their thread gets locked 😉

Good point. A couple alternatives might be:

- Contact a moderator who can edit the locked post, providing some info for the lockee
- Contact a moderator who may be able to email the user by viewing their profile (which may be hidden to us)
- Search for other threads where they've posted, particularly multiple times. That way they may see your post.
- Live and let lock

A spin-off of the PM/BuddyList thing that will almost assuredly fall under "We'd need to modify the software and it ain't happening": Allow a PM override for Anandtech Moderators/Administration (i.e., Mods/Admins can send you a PM, regardless of whether you have them enabled or not). Granted, the folks may not check the PM box, but if you never accept PM's, you might notice the red padlock icon and check it out. Along those same lines, what about a default "welcome" PM for new-members?

Don't mind me, just thinking out loud.

a "welcome" pm sounds like a cool idea. I dont really want to bother anandtech moderator every time a n00b gets his thread locked though 😉

I would imagine that it is trivial to set the default to have PMing enabled... when you create accounts, set whatever is set when you enable it later (?)

there must be a reason they aren't on by default.

Why would a thread get locked for the member not having PM's enabled? They are optional. However, in the FS/T forum your profile needs to be enabled w/ a valid email address. I would rather see that option enabled by default when you first join.

no, the idea is, if some n00b asks a question in the wrong place, and gets their thread locked, I might want to ask / tell them something else related to what they posted... so if PM'ing was enabled by default, that would not be a problem.
