Ze deal died.
And a lot of talking in 1 mesage.

Compusa = $114.99 w/ $65 MIR.
Fry's = $69.99

PM to $69.99 - $65 MIR - $15 instant rebate = $10 in your POCKET!!!!!!

Course, that is if they'll price match that instant rebate also.

YMMV.

Fry's electronics ad

Go test your luck :)
Just make sure to never ever call and ask, for they'll turn you down.

I'll have to drive 25 miles to the Fry's (Downers Grove, IL) and CompUSA which are less than a mile from each other. Hopefully Fry's price will be the same till saturday.

A few have done it in another forum. It appears you that you need to bring in an actual newspaper ad. They won't accept a copy or online ad.

We need to start strategically planting checkout girls in major stores. Everyone knew cyberspace would eventually leak out into reality anyway... Please submit resumes, one and all.

I had some minor problems, but got my rebate form. The cashier didn't want to give it to me, and I had to talk a blue streak to convince her that it was my property, that I had paid $69.99 for it, and if I didn't want to redeem it for the $65 rebate, that was my right. I don't know why this little hispanic woman cared at all, but she didn't seem to want to give me the rebate form. I could tell when she gave me the $100+ total and I showed her the Fry's ad, she didn't like it one bit. She just snatched the rebate form as it printed out. ANYWAYS, CompUSA did not give me the $15 instant rebate, and even if they had, the fine print on the rebate form says "Rebate value will not exceed purchase price." So at best, you get the drive for free, if you have a n00b clerk who gives you the instant rebate & the mail-in/eRebate. I'm satisfied with paying $5 for a 200 GB PATA drive, even if I had to drive clear across Houston to get it the closest CompUSA claimed to be sold out, although they have the "CompUSA by Maxtor" branded drives, which are identical down to every last transistor. The people there are idiots. I asked one of the clerks if they had any more 200 GB Maxtor PATA drives, and he said "No, those are IDE." Technically, that's correct, but SATA drives are also IDE. I started to tell him about what a Parallel ATA drive was and his brain looked like it was about to pop, so I just left. It's amazing that places like CompUSA and BestBuy will hire complete and utter morons, but won't hire those who are actually qualified for the job but lack sales experience. That's why I don't shop at these places unless I can pull something like I did today. These people are idiots for the most part, and kudo's to Fry's for "one-upping" them by letting us get the $5/free drives, and everbody else who isn't "in the know" will go to Fry's for it to buy the drive for the same price but without any rebate to wait for. I'm permanently banned from all Fry's premises (long story), but I still can use their sale paper to the best of my advantage. At worst, I send a neighbor or friend there for me and get them a little something for their troubles. By the way, has anyone pulled this "trick" off twice, either by themselves or with a friend?

But a long story short, you won't actually MAKE money from this. The best you can hope for is to get a free 200 GB hard drive (even if i is PATA), and $5 ain't bad neither :-D

I'm drawing a mental picture of you in my mind, douglasb...and I tell ya, it's not pretty.

I've seen your type who frequent computer stores like Fry's; arguing every fact the sales guy has to say and bragging that you can get just about every item cheaper from somewhere else...

I can't even imagine what you did to warrant a banning, but i'm sure you're certainly proud of it.

Can you imagine that you haven't the slightest idea of what you're talking about, and that you're threadcrapping? If you'd like to draw mental pictures of me in your mind, don't do it where everybody has to read this petty garbage. I could say a lot of things about you based on the 1 post that I've read out of your 44 total, but I'm going to take the high road. The bottom line is this: You don't know me, althought you're free to make ASSumptions. You don't know my "type" or that I even have a "type," much less my behaviors. You know nothing whatsoever about the situation, and you've contributed nothing to this thread other than throwing out a pathetic attempt to insult me by insinuating I'm proud of my reaction in a situation that you know literally nothing about. Since you seem to have been here an entire two weeks, maybe you should read the rules and FAQ, and pay particular attention to the part about "threadcrapping" and it being a bannable offense. This thread is about a Hot Deal concerning a Maxtor HDD, not your personal opinion of someone you've never met. If you have any class whatsoever, you'll extend at least some sort of an apology or retraction, and actually contribute to this discussion. If you're here to stereotype and threadcrap, you can take that to the "H"

That being said, whether you apologize or not (and I don't expect or demand it to be public, or at all, but it would be the classy thing to do), I forgive your lack of knowledge (ignorance is too strong of a word in this case) in this situation, and I'm willing to take the higher road and try to keep my temper under control. I don't know you or anything about you, other than the fact that you jump to broad conclusions on people's behavior patterns and what you think that person is like based on the fact that you read a single paragraph with reference to a negative experience that person (me) had. Maybe you've never had anything bad happen to you, but I doubt it. Regardless, not once did I brag about anything whatsoever, and if you look carefully, you'll see that I actually posted about the topic at hand. Please, for your sake, mine, and the rest of us, take a look at the Rules and FAQ for the forum and try to be a) a little more tactful, b) a little less judgmental, and c) a little more focused on what we are actually supposed to be discussing.

Please don't take offense to this response, because I'm not trying to burn you, only trying to promote the idea of common courtesy and not snapping to judgements so quickly. For every person like you on this forum who has something bad to say about me, I can find 10 who have wonderful things to say, but that's immaterial. The point is that we all deserve respect as long as we don't violate or harm other forum members. Your personal opinion of me, however ill-conceived it may be, is yours and yours alone, not something that needs to be shared in a discussion about a Hard Drive on sale at CompUSA. If you have issue with me, or anyone in the forums, take it up with them via PM, or message a moderator. This is not a "battleground" and we are not children here, nor are we social psychologists. The last time I checked, a forum member's opinion about another member who has been active for over 10 times as long (although that is irrelevant) was not an issue that we discuss in the "Hot Deals" forum.

Lastly, I apologize for being so abrupt and rude with you, but you angered me very much with your snap-judgement. If you read my 1000+ other posts, you would see that normally I am not rude in the least, and have worked hard to establish myself as a good trader and forum member. You have less of a leg to stand on, so to speak, so I can somewhat expect you to not have learned the etiquette we use around here (I know I didn't at your stage). That being said, please refrain from personal attacks at all, and if you absolutely MUST, do it via PM. Also, if you plan on trading, enable your profile. And last but not least, if no one has told you, "Welcome to Anandtech!"

Now here's hoping we don't get off on the wrong foot next time around. :beer:

It certainly is not worth it, it shows certain character flaws of your own if you were to do so, and most importantly, it has absolutely nothing to do with the thread topic. Thank you for taking the high road and doing the right thing, even though I know you were probably tempted to bust on me. We all have our faults and have all made our mistakes in the past, and pointing fingers and making accustations and personal attacks contributes nothing whatsoever to this forum, except a waste of bandwidth. So kudos to you for sticking to your guns when I know you wanted to say something about me. What I posted probably sounds worse than it is, but that's all a matter of opinion. Thank you for showing respect, and I will do the same to you in the future.

This is somewhat on-topic, so I will address it. I did frequent stores like Fry's, which actually sell MUCH more than computers (in fact, maybe 1/4 - 1/3 of the store is computer-related in any way), but my interaction with the employees there was very infrequent and abrupt. When I went there, I generally knew exactly what I wanted, only asked for assistance getting it if it was out of reach, and if I did have a question, (for example, they advertise Mushkin PC3200 1 GB kit on sale....I might ask, "which version of Mushkin?" since there are several). I have never once in my life bragged about getting items cheaper from somewhere else. Trust me, if you work at a computer store, you know you can get things cheaper elsewhere. If you've ever heard of the Internet, you probably know that, in fact. Regardless, I cannot think of one instance where I argued with any sales person, much less with everything they have to say. If they can tell you know what you want, they generally tend to leave you alone. The guy at CompUSA basically lied to me when he told me they did not have any Maxtor 200 GB PATA drives, because I turned the corner, and lo and behold, there they were. He incorrectly referred to them as IDE drives, which is a very generic term for a hard drive, and can also include SATA drives, which is not what I was looking for. If you were to browse the For Sale/Trade forums, you would see at least 20 PATA drives for every IDE drive listed for sale, because that's the proper nomenclature. If this man manages a computer store and doesn't know this, but 90-something percent of the members of Anandtech do, then something is wrong here. The bottom line is, he misinformed me, I corrected him, but we did not get into any argument. He simply said "Oh, OK," and I said "Thanks" and we both went on our ways. The only argument I had was with the cashier, who seemed hell-bent on keeping my rebate form (even though I can fill it out online, and probably obtain a copy online, print and fill it out, and mail that as well). From the very first post of this thread, it's obvious that there's a common goal here: for us to get these drives cheaply thanks to CompUSA's pricematching policy and rebate, and Fry's having a sale on that particular item at that particular time. I'm sure I'm not the only person who had trouble getting the rebate form from the clerk. In fact, I know for sure I'm not, because I have read a very similar thread on another forum that many Anandtechers also frequent. I'm not an argumentative or disagreeable person, I just want what is fair and I want the product being advertised with the rebate being advertised, and it is their policy to match retail prices (which occur before rebates - I may never redeem this rebate, who knows?) The only time I was involved in anything vaguely resembling an argument (and I wouldn't even call it that, no voices were raised, no scowls, no negative reaction of any kind - it was a disagreement) was when the cash register swiped the rebate form being printed out to go with the receipt for the hard drive I had just purchased. Put yourself in this situation. Would you stand idly by, or would you try to do something about it? I did something about it, and I'm getting my drive for $5. You can get yours for $69.99 if you'd like, that's up to you, but I don't think I should have to defend myself for asking for a rebate form that I am entitled to. Anyways, enough of this nonsense. Does anyone else have any experiences to share regarding this deal?

Only took like 3 minutes to read it, and all of his points were valid, and that idiot clerk was being a retard if she wouldn't give him his rebate form.

Well, I read it, but I suppose that's mostly because it was intended for me, hehe. Ok, i'll admit I jumped to conclusions about you. I did, however, read TWO of your posts prior to posting mine, and both mentioned the "Fry's incident" that got you banned from the store. Couple that with your mentioning of arguing with one of the sales guy's knowledge of a particular product, and I couldn't help forming an image of you in my mind based on my past experiences. Granted, I probably shouldn't have posted that, and I apologize for that. No hard feelings, bud! :)

I guess it just irks me when customers go into a store and strike up an argument with a sales guy over who's right, just to prove he's read up on the subject matter a bit more. I mean, let's be honest here, many of those guys who work at Fry's type stores have to have general knowledge about a crapload of products they sell, not just a particular model of a particular brand's Hard Drive series. They're there to help the casual customer, who doesn't know any better. If ya know the sales guy is wrong, just simply keep your mouth shut I say!

Alright, so probably no one read my long post, I don't care. Back to the hot deal! (And thanks for the welcome, douglas :D)

Ha! look who is talking about character flaws! You are an A-hole!. You can take that personally. It's a friggin waste of bandwidth reading about your adventures in retail land where you are obviously far superior to all clerks because you know that "SATA are technically IDE drives" and the clerk doesn't. For that you called all Cusa, BB etc. retail clerks "complete morons" and then you want to talk about character flaws. If you want better retail clerks, work there yourself.

Clerks are noobs who give you the deals you want, but then you don't know why the "hispanic" (are we a racist too? does her race matter?) clerk that is watching out for her store's bottom line cares at all. Maybe you are just far superior to all that you encounter?

One minute you are attacking all that stand in your way of a nearly free hard drive, while abusing a system that's designed to benefit the masses and the next minute you are on high moral ground praising someone for their restraint in not stating the obvious. Please, save me the BS about your post count, forum rules and thread crapping. If the mods don't like what I'm saying they will deal with me.
