I am trying to buy a wireless cable router/firewall device that will deliver strong security from the internet and blazing speed for online gaming.

Here are some brands I am considering:

I will use the wired connections far more than the wireless access. How secure do I need to be? Do I need SPI?

Are these brands sufficient, or should I be looking at SonicWall or WatchGuard? If I was to move up to one of these higher-end brands, would my online gaming performance suffer?

TIA!

All of these devices are within the same ballgame.

I personally prefer this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi...&N=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

The devices on your list provide similar level of security.

Do you need SPI? We do not know what exactly are your ?Hidden? needs; you have to read about what SPI is and decide for yourself.

Same apply to the other security devices that you mentioned, most End Users do not need them.

I have heard good things about BUffalo's products. The SPI (stateful packet inspection) seems to be the default baseline for "real" firewall protection, more so than just NAT. Am I correct?

SPI as implemented in Entry level Routers provides a capacity to filter Internet content. You can Block IPs, or certain terms (like "Sex";) ). It is a protection that can help parent to prevent Kids from certain sites, or business curbing employees from certain uses. Otherwise, it is not adding security per-se.

In any case the Buffalo does support Entry Level SPI they call it Dynamic Packet Filtering.
