PLZ HELP - Radeon 9500 pro detection error

Hi guys,

I thought I had a great system until this problem came and nipped me in the butt! If anyone could shed some light on the problem I would muchly appreciate it.

I have the following system

2.4C Pentium 4 (not overclocked)
Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
Radeon 9500 pro
1 DIMM 512 MB Corsair PC3200 2.5CAS RAM
Antec Sonata Case
Stock Cooling

The system has never been able to detect that i have an agp 8x card and consistantly in sandrasoft and 3dmark it would be detected as 4x. So in trying to fix it I did the following.

1) I installed the Catalyst 3.5 Drivers
- error still there

2) Updated the intel inf drivers from intel from this link
- now system crashes when attempting to play games

3) Update to Catalyst 3.6 Driver
- Now system is stable and doesn't crash when attempting to play games (at least as far as tested) but card detected as 4x still. 3dmark scores increased 700 points from step 1's results!

4) Updated the P4P800 Bios to 1.008
- Now system is unstable cannot play games and card can't be detected propperly (is detected as "unknown 32bit 3.3V Shared PME Halflength Availible")

Now I'm at a loss for what to do. It seems that whatever I do I can't get the card detected at 8x. I could flash bios again (go to an earlier bios config) and hope that somehow it resolves it. What do you guys think I should I do. I'm really at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance!

there is virtually NO improvment between 4x and 8 x so I wouldn't worry, But only thing I could think of is set it to 8x in bios and make sure it is on 8x in the cat control panel.

I've searched everywhere in the bios. It doesn't seem that it's an option which can be set. In the display panel it is set to be 8x... still confused... =)

Start calling Asus and ATI to make them pay for selling you on the hype of AGP 8x 😉

I believe your "problem" is due to smartgart in the cat drivers.
at startup it runs a series of test to see what setting will be most stable for your board & probably due to a noisy bus or whatever, AGP X4 is the highest setting for stability.
I suggest you live with it as like other folk have said, you'll see no difference between x4 & x8 AGP in real world applications!

Thanks for the tip. I'm happy with 4x performance right now but unfortunately I can't even get that. Do you think reflashing the motherboard's bios could fix the problem? And reset it to 4x? After I reflash the bios do I have to reinstall all the motherboard's drivers as well?
