Hello all,
Im new to the forums! I just wanted to ask a few simple questions. I've wanted to ask these questions for weeks now...however there is no one qualified around where I live to tell me otherwise. I guess I was just being stubborn in not joining the forums sooner! AnyhooZ! This wil be my first build! and I'm very excited, I am looking at getting it all wrapped up around a month from now ...give or take...I will be running an AMD based system....Phenom II 940 ATI GPU and what not.DDR3 the works!...but the one thing that stumps me the most is the dam GPU!!!..

Ok I'll cut the crap.....please tell me would I be better off getting 2 1gig 4890s in Crossfire or 2 2gig Vapor X 4870's?........I'm looking to play high end games..crysis,bioshock,the witcher,,etc...please tell me which I would be better off with! Oh and I will be gaming at 1920x1200!!..so its imperative that I am able to do so with either one of these cards..please help me!!1

Sincerely

Two 1GB 4890's would be a bit better then two 2GB 4870's. You wont really be memory limited at 1920 and the much faster clocks will definitely improve FPS.

And welcome to the forums. This place is pretty awesome when it comes to hardware knowledge. Just don't ask any stupid questions in "Highly Technical" if you want any respect around here.

Hey man WOW SUPER FAST REPLY DAM!! tyZ so much bro I really appreciate it!...I was leaning towards the 2 4890s....but thanks for making it that much clearer!....cuz yeah I mean I wont be gaming any higher than 1920x1200..as if thats low right?...hey I'm gaming on my ps3 atm @ 1280x720!!!..as only a few games support 1080p..so gaming in 1200p is heaven!....thank you very very much man....and thanks for the welcome!!...I know for a fact that I'll be neding more sound advice like this in the near future with my build comming up and all.

OH one more thing man...any idea on what wattage of PSU I'd be looking @ for those? I've heard that I'd be fine with a 750-800?...please let me know if this is adequate and or if I can go lower...as this being my first build price is always a concern!

Thanks a BUNCH man take care and have a super Day!

Sincerely

This Corsair 850W would suit your needs perfectly. Two 4890's consume quite a bit of power, and you'll be pairing it up with an AMD quad core. I wouldn't skimp on your power supply as buying a cheap one could (probably would) ruin your entire computer. Its $144.99 with a $10 mail in rebate.

Its real easy to skimp out on a power supply. I lost a Pentium 4 2.26ghz, motherboard and a Radeon 9600 in 2005 by buying a cheap power supply. It started smoking and spiked my entire build with power. RIP first gaming build.

2x1GB 4890's by a long shot.

Unless your heart is set on these ATi cards, it's always a good idea to look at the NV chips currently available. Personally I'd rather go for a GTX295 (which is about as fast, almost equal to 2xHD4890) than two dedicated cards due to power consumption and the benefit of having just one PCB, but that might be just me.

Yeah @ Jandlecack...Well when I first set my mind on doing a build...I was 110% Green Team!....and now I'm leaning more towards ATI as you can see. But guys I come from a console backround mostly..other than a few wasted years ith GW....and nothing disgusts me more than a fanboy!...and I'm not one!...I am totally open to either companies GPU variables. But heres the thing. I dont just want sub-par graphic performance with my games I want bleeding edge!...and my only options for that were and yet still remain as follows. GTX 295 GTX 285 HD487X2 and more recently the HD4890 Crossfire. I would personally crap myself and WILL when I get either one of those cards mentioned!...Lemme tell ya guys, to me this build is just a bit more personal.

My breif story: I've wanted a hardcore gaming PC for YEARS christ I mean Years!...and always thought that I could never afford one. I was always told that it would cost me in the upwards of 3k to get a good gaming pc ala Alienware or anything else for that matter....though now I know that that is a frekin crock of shit!..pardon my french. I've played alot of PC games in the past with ultra low res settings and just barley squeeked by at that with my lappy here. I mean hey this lappy is awesome!...but its not a gamer...let get that straight!...So build is sort of a deep and somewhat foolhardy salvation and emancipation to my later days with the PC.

No more turning down all of the games settings to the absolute depths of hell and still get shit FPS. NO MORE. I want to have that feeling of opening a PC game and installing it with confidence..knowing that my system will kick its ASS!...and after booting up the game jacking up all the settings sky high and just playing!..I want that feeling I've wanted it for years...ever since TES:IV...and shit thats quite a while back..well at least for me. I have a ps3 which is kick ass...but the systems power is untapped and overlooked severely in my opinion. It can clearly render the shit out of games in 1080p..yet the ammount of games that display themselves in NATIVE* 1080p are too far and too few between. I love high res character models, resolutions and what not I mean WHO DOSEN'T RIGHT?....and the ps3 is awesome...but untill they start releasing more games in NATIVE 1080p....I'll just stand here. I'm also amazed at the raw power of the PC..I mean the ps3 has 256mb of GDDR3 ...where as the 2 4890's have a total of 2GIG of GDDR5...I mean what more do you need to know? ...I'm really starting to see what I though I saw years ago...and that is that the PC is the ultimate....its that simple...now I dont wanna start some i love you ass flame war here...I love consoles and I've begun to love the PC....but you can't argue with the numbers!!!...

I am a perfectionist...I really cant help it...Im 17 and I've been training in classical piano since I was 4...and I LOVE IT. My music is far from being this frekin unstoppable angelic laser beam of doom...but my teachers and professors across the years have always stressed perfection...and thats what I strive to acheive!...so when I play games and see jaggies...and low res shit ..just random stuff like that it just irratates the hell outta me! Not to the point that its going to ruin my day or anything I mean I got better things to worry about...but you know.

So to make a long story short I want perfection in my games and from what I've experienced the only way to expperience that is through the PC..the tweakablilty is pure crazyness!

But getting back to the GPU thingie... I would love a GTX 295 and frankly for this build I could easily afford it...but I can get much better performance from the 2 4890's...for about 30 dollars less....on certain cards much more than that in fact. I mean like I said Im no fanboy...and the 295 is still one kick ass card...but 2 4890's beat it by quite a considerable margin in various benchmarks on more than one occasion. In fact not that the 4870X2 is anything better but it gets smoked out even worse than the 295 by the 2 4890's....heres the link if you guys haven't read this already Check out the 4890 CF benchies

So when it comes down to it...I can get 2 HIS Turbo OC HD4890's clocked @ 900Mhz for 519.00..including a free copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky....1 4870X2 which yields inferior performance is around 499.99...the GTX 295 which again is inferior to the twin AMD's is anywhere from 500.00-700.00 on the Egg...all these prices are from there but of course!

And another thing that helps me lean more towards ATI is the fact that their newest additions are using GDDR5..as where the green team yet still awesome STILL uses GDDR3...now I know that ATI uses a 256bit memory interface and Nvidia uses a 512 bit memory interface...but you still can't argue wich tha facts...when you hit 1920x1200 and higher that GDDR5..is gonna come in handy in a BIG way...as opposed to the GDDR3. And the GDDR5 is still provides TWICE the date per pin of GDDR3 @ the same Frekin clock speeds!!!...so for me its really a no brainer!...

And the one thing that really anchored my with Nvidia before all of this was PsyX...and I was like thats flippin SHAWEEEEEET...guess what...only a handful of games actually support the thing!!..and of course there are more and more games that do support it and thats great!! really it is..but all of the games which support Phyx...are not the games that I will be playing...so...my one pro for staing with the Green Team..basically is unjustifiable..in my book anyhooZ.

Well I suppose I've rambled enough..but thanks for your replies guyZ...and as I've mentioned prior to this entry..I'll be needing you guys's help pretty soon here...once I get everything finalized!...so in anycase thanks for everything...but don't forget about me just yet!!!....I'll bother you guyZ with a few more pesky inquires before the day is done done kid yourself!...

Peace b unto you all

Sincerely

Sounds like you've already made up your mind and have your heart set on the 4890s.
