Well :! you have few options :!

1. Increase the 8800GT fan speed from 30% to 70% ( anything above would be too noisy i think )
2. Buy an aftermath cooler

I don't really get how the GPU could just freeze due to overheating at those temps. My 7600GT runs at 71 degrees on idle and goes close to 90 under load. Anandtech recently tested the passively cooled Sparkle 8800GT and it ran flawlessly at 111 degrees. Maybe it's just a bad card you have or I don't know..

Download Rivatuner.

Set fan speed from 29% (what you're at, it doesn't automatically change unless these new 8800GTs have their BIOS flashed. When did you get it?) to something like 50-55%.

well I know eVGA came out with a bios flash to fix the speed sensor on the fan for there line of 8800 GT SC, SSC, and KO versions. I flashed my bios at the begining of the month but I didn't give it a chance to see if the fan change from 29% to whatever. I use river tuner to monitor my 8800GT SC and I'm very happy but I still don't like my temp after a session of COD4 they can reach 72 so I opted for a Zalman VF1000 and hopefully that will do the trick and then I can overclock to 8800 GTS/ GTX speeds.

Don't.

It's the "nature of the beast".

Use RiveTuner to speed up the fan, at least to 45% on start-up.

Then I have my Temperature Monitoring set to Fan 60% with temp > 65C, and Fan 75% with temp > 70C.

Crysis load temp is about 75C.

Riva Tuner guide:

Good luck!

At that rate you'll break your card. Boost the fan speeds or face the consequences of your philosophy.
