Plumbing question

RossMAN

Grand Nagus
Dishwasher is to the left of our dual kitchen sink. The dishwasher drains into the left kitchen sink which is currently CLOGGED, we'll fix that later on. To make it more complicated that clogged sink also has a garbage disposal which isn't making any noises but a humming noise.

Before the clog, the dishwasher used to drain water into the left sink filling it about 2/3 full, then it would slowly drain. Now that the left sink is completely clogged, if we run our dishwasher what do you think will happen?

Sorry if that's a little confusing 🙂

Check under the sink. You'll see where the dishwasher hooks in to the piping. If the clog is above that point, then you're most likely fine. However, don't come looking for me when your sink overflows and ruins all the dell monitors in boxes you have stacked up all over your house. 😉

You will have a flood in your kitchen is what will happen. 😛

It also sounds like you need a new garbage disposal which is actually not that hard to change(I changed mine last year) but it seriously sucks because it's just an awkward repair... you gotta hold the dang thing up while you turn the part that hooks onto the sink.

Good luck with that.

Your drainage sucked in the first place if your sink is backfilling with sewage from the dishwasher.

And there might be some way to fix that garbage disposal but I'm not exactly sure how. I killed mine in my apartment (tried to run it with the sink full of water lol), and the landlord just had to come over and do some little thing to it to get it to run again. Must be a safety overload switch on it.

Yes, that too. But I think this is because he needs a new garbage disposal unit. 😉

Nah, he'll just prop it up with OEM HDD's that are still sealed in the bags that he bought for, like, next to nothing. 😛

go under there and look at the bottom of your disposal unit. you will see a inverted hexagon call an allen nut. find a suitable wrench to fit it and crank the disposal blades free.
then look inside and find out whats jamming it and remove it.
if you cant find anything try running it again.

you may have to remove the trap and clean the pipe with a coat hanger pulling out all the gunk you been putting down there. just take a big pot to catch it all for tommorrows stew.

disposals are one of the worst ideas ever for plumbing.
mainly because they are retrofitted into older pipes which are iron and tend to rust and build up blocks.

If the dishwasher would fill the sink before, chances are there was a partially clogged portion of the plumbing further down. I'm guessing that area finally got fully clogged. So, if you ran the dishwasher, it would overflow the sink.

Use some concentrated base.

I hope you got a deal on mops. 😉

As long as the water flows into the sink then I'm fine, I'll just bucket it into the other sink or whatever. If a pipe bursts or something then I'm fscked.

Thanks, that's what I was assuming would happen. So as long as I'm nearby the sink I should be ok.

Damn this sucks, need to get a bucket and some tools 🙁

The dishwasher will easily over flow your sink. Typically, the outlet for the dishwasher connects to the top of the disposal. Then everything drains through the disposal. If you have a dual sink and the sink that doesn't back up drains fine then your clog is either in your disposal or the pipe immediatly below it. Most double sinks share the drain line. The drain pipe from the main sink obviously goes to the disposal, which hasa pipe that goes to the wall. the 2nd sink taps into the main sink drain pipe after the disposal, but before the water trap U.

How to fix. Turn off power at fuse box to the kitchen wall. put a bunch of towels or somethign to catch the water. Unscrew the drain pipe and run a coat hanger or sewer snake thorugh it. If nothing comes out then it is your disposal that is jacked up. In that case, I suggest you hit up Fat Wallet and look fora smoking deal on garbage disposals.
