plugging in ide cable and optical drive

i have a ide cable that has a gray connector (slave) and black(master)with the blue obviously on the prime ide do i use this solo cable to plug my HD on the gray and the optical drive on the black? the best configuration is what i am looking for

Black = Hard Drive

Gray = Optical Drive (should preferably be connected to the motherboards secondary IDE channel if there's space).

You should separate each drive (each on its own cable), but as long as you set the jumpers correctly, it doesn't really matter where you plug them in.

ok so i should seprate them (get another ide cable?) and put the optical on the secondary channel? and leave my solo HD on the prime channel?

If you can, then yes. The cdrom is slower than the harddrive more than likely, and if you put them both on the same channel the harddrive will have to slow down to the speed of the cdrom (at least thats what my computer maintenence teacher has told me).
