Plugging in headphones while something is playing...

Is it ok to plug or unplug headphones into a soundcard while an MP3 is playing? When I was young, my dad said that there was a possibility that a short may occur in the plugging/unplugging motion, thus damaging the equipment.

I have never had any problems doing that... should be fine.

I do it all the time. Other then the weird noises that hurt my ears, nothing goes wrong.

Never had a problem either, may get a quick krackle in the headphones or speakers but don't think it will hurt anything

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't really hurt anything, but that loud pop I get sometimes really bothers me. Anyhow, thanks for the input.

I get that loud "pop" as well, so I usually turn the volume on my speakers all the way down.

i would say that there is a *very remote* possibility of something bad happening.... but you really shouldn't worry about it

Technically, a short is possible, but it's horribly unlikely.
