I recently bought all new parts for my PC & hence reinstalled windows..... now whenever I have my DVD-RW drive plugged in my PC starts loading windows but before it shows the desktop it reboots the machine..... it works fine if I don't have this drive plugged in; plugging my DVD-ROM in works fine also.

Strange!?

Bad drive?

Did you try a different data cable? Is it plugged into a 40 wire (ATA33) or an 80 wire (ATA100/133) IDE cable? If it is a 40wire try hooking up an 80wire one.

This is the same drive that I used on my PC before I purchased all the new parts & it worked fine up to now..... I tried another cable but still no luck...... how do I tell if the cable is 40 or 80 wire? Thanks!

Also..... I thought maybe updating the firmware would help possibly?..... but I cannot get windows to load to install the firmware.... would it be possible to do that in safe-mode?

Oh, you said "all new parts for my PC" so I thought it was a brand new drive.

40 wire cables have thicker wires than the 80 wire cables do. pic
The top cable is 40 wire, the bottom is 80 wire. Notice how "coarse" the wires are compared to the "fine" wires.

I don't know much about firmware upgrades, I've never done one before.

Ok.. finally fixed the problem. Was reading another forum where a guy had the same issue & it turned out that Roxio was messing with it somehow.... so I removed all CD Burning related software & bingo...... it boots! :D
