I have a 1394 wire coming from the front panel and there's no 1394 pins on the mobo. Can i use instead the com1 pins on the mobo. They seem to match perfectly.

No, they are NOT compatible. They are for serial devices, you will likely toast the device and or board if you do so

Only if you want to destroy the mobo.
Best bet is to add a PCI card with USB / Firewire
which has Internal Headers as well as External Jacks
on it. Very cheap nowadays.

Actually, I don't think it would hurt a thing. OP would connect a standard 1394 external port block to a serial port header with the same physical format. That would send the serial port to the external FW port. What would be connected to that? Therin lies the problem. Unless some external device is connected to that port, nothing will happen. If a FW device is connected to the port getting serial port data and voltages, it probably would damage the external device - not the mobo.
