Plugged speakers in... 'hardware not responding'?

Friend just sent me this email - ideas what the problem might be?

I believe the OS is XP.

------------------------------------------

Plugged some speakers into the computer. Now the sound doesn't work and the message is that the hardware is not responding. He didn't turn the speakers off before plugging them into the computer so possibility that he blew the sound card.

More details please. What sort of speakers? What sound card? Exactly where did he plug the speakers in? USB, 3.5mm jack etc?

Whew... ok... just spoke to her. It's Windows XP. The system was turned off and the speakers were plugged into the card while the system was turned on. Now, she is getting the error message when she trys to play a music cd - 'hardware not responding'.

The speakers are not USB... forget the brand but they are 'DELL bundle' mid-line speakers...

This is very odd...speakers are not computer hardware, they of course require no drivers and they have no impact on the system when plugged in....it neither knows they are there or not.

sounds like the soundcard is playing up, you should guide her through uninstalling the drivers, maybe removing the main part of the soundcard under sound & game controllers, reboot and then reinstall the drivers from the appropriate dell cd. This won't be that easy....there probably won't be a dedicated soundcard cd.....there might be a motherboard one though...is it integrated sound?

You'll need to find out what soundcard it is, it might a dedicated PCI one.

Try as TheCorm suggested if possible. You may not necessarily need the install CD's, but maybe you can uninstall, reboot and have XP automatically install the drivers again. That may work.
