Plugged in HDMI monitor, sound gone

Haven't posted a thread in a while but this is driving me crazy.

I plugged in a new HDMI monitor, windows defaulted the audio playback to the monitor. I go into sounds and disable the monitor at set the sound card as the playback device but still not audio! I try to play the tone and I get "failed to play test tone." The speakers no longer show up as a playback option...

HDMI carries the Audio in its own Plug. Make sure that the Audio configuration in Windows is configured correctly for HDMI output.

For starter if you have a speakers plug in the Green jack of the audio output in back of the computer try to unplug it.

I'm trying to run audio through my speakers, not HDMI...but speakers magically disappeared from the output menu.

What OS? Win7 defaults HDMI audio output to be the preferred output when plugged in, but you other speakers shouldn't have disappeared. Did you mistakenly disable your other audio device instead?

Or is this WinXP?

When using HDMI in most cases the Audio processing is transferred to the Video card chipset.

HDMI include the Audio and when plugged to an HDMI Monitor's jack will play through the Monitor Speakers.

Otherwise, use DVI with regular Speakers.

I currently run a system with HDMI video out to a TV, but use optical digital audio out for audio, so that's not true in all cases.

That is true.

However, one of the things that I really dislike in forums is the "L'État, c'est moi" approach.

Which is the assumption that what ever I have every one have, thus I try to stick with whatever is the common hardware unless the OP specifically provides more inclusive info.
