Plugged in HD while power on...computer dead! :(

Got careless and plugged in a HD while the computer was powered on (in the BIOS). :|🙁😱 Everything went dead and now it won't restart, nothing. Did I kill it? Anything I can do? Any advice appreciated...

Thats a good Idea....saved my butt a couple of times when I thought my system was a goner

You may have killed the motherboard, though. I doubt the CPU or memory or other components did take any damage, but the motherboard may have.
If that is the case, it should be possible to RMA the board though, since I doubt most manufacturers have seen a user error like this before.

I did something similar to this once, but it was a a CD-ROM i was plugging in, your situation might be different, but i unplugged the power cable two or three times and hit the power button every time i did this and it started back up. Hopefully this might help, but like i said, maybe this isn't the case with yours.

Put in the PSU from my other machine and it started right up, so no really expensive damage! 🙂 Looks like I gotta buy a new PSU though.

Could it be the fuse inside of the psu? If that blew when you attached the hd then the psu wouldn't work. It wouldn't cost much to replace a fuse compared to buying a new psu.. just an idea.

Unplug the the power mains for an hour or so. Then plug it in. Should be ok. Also, if you are brave, take the PSU apart and see in there is a fuse that blew. Some PSU have fuses.

Lucky... quite lucky....

Tried the PSU again after work today, still no dice. If there is a fuse inside, what would it look like? I'm not sure what to look for...

Most likely, but not necessarily, it would be a glass tube about an inch long with metal caps plugged into a socket. There should be a thin wire running thru it. If you find the fuse, and the wire is broke, get the rating off the metal cap and go buy another at Radio Shack. The rating will be something like 250V, 10A. I'm not saying these are the ratings for your fuse, but this is how it'll be rated......volts & amps.

Looks like the fuse is intact, but the things smells acrid. I just bought a new PSU for $30 shipped. Probably better than the old one anyway...

Cheap lesson. I moved a box once with the hd running outside it on a ribbon cable on the desk and busted the heads off. Stupid expensive lesson.
