so i built my new comp last night. i have an asus p5k-e and a cooler master 500w psu.

i'm trying to hookup the main power to the mobo (the BIG braided power cable). it has a ~16 slot side hookup, and then a 4 slot wide hookup. it's just one big port on the mobo itself, but 2 plugs coming from the psu .do i hook them BOTH up or just the 16 slot one?

As far as I can tell your talking about the 20+4 ATX12V power connector. Yes, connect them and plug them into the 24-pin keyed power connector on your motherboard.

Oh, the 4 slot wide hook up should be your 12V EPS connector, that goes to the power connector near your cpu socket at the very top of your mobo.

yeah, i am referring to the 20+4 ATX12v connector. i already plugged the 12V EPS connector into it's slot on the mobo. it was odd though, cuz the port is 4x2 and the plug from the psu is only 2x2. but it works :)

THANKS!

why exactly is the 24 pin connector split into 2 pieces now?

nevermind. found this in an article...

"The 24 pin main power connector was added in ATX12V 2.0 to provide extra power needed by PCI Express slots."

so they split it up just in case you're using an older mobo with only 20 pins. i learned something new :)
