I downloaded and installed the new Det 23.11 drivers for my Hercules GeForce2 Ultra video card and got a nice surprise on my 3Dmark2001 scores. My previous highest score was 3734, but now it is 4199! I think that is a nice improvement (granted it is a synthetic benchmark).

Screenshot of 3Dmark2001 Results

My 3Dmark2000 scores stayed about the same.

Ran on:
WinXP Pro
T-Bird 1.1GHz
AV7 mobo
512MB PC133 SDRAM
Hercules Prophet2 GeForce2 Ultra (265/490MHz)

Wow, really?

I posted because this was the first time in a LONG time that updating my drivers made any significant improvement. The new drivers even fixed a small visual problem I was having in RTWC.

Why on earth does everyone care so much about 3DMark? I just can't understand the joy everyone gets when they see their score increase by 50 points.

Why do people feel they must make negative comments? :disgust: Maybe that is how I could become a "Diamond Member", just make comments on every topic regardless if it is helpful or positive.

The gain was ~450points, which I feel was significant.

What negative comments? Explain to me in what way an 800 point increase in 3DMark means anything in 3D gaming? That's all I ask.

Do you play 3DMark? Of course not. So I'm very eager to hear your explanation.

Maybe that is how I could become a "Diamond Member", just make comments on every topic regardless if it is helpful or positive.

If that's the way you want to do it, I'm not going to stop you. I don't do that though.

I have to agree with BFG. 3DMark isn't everything. Did you notice that 23.11 breaks Vsync control in D3D? This will lower frame rates in real D3D games. I've seen a few versions that increase 3Dmark scores, but have serious drawbacks. I tried them and went back to 22.50. Don't let 3DMark be the end all to what driver version is the best to use.

oldfart,

I understand. If you look at my original unedited post I said:

<< I think that is a nice improvement (granted it is a synthetic benchmark). >>

I am fully aware that it is NOT a game, but it is a tool that I used to "measure" my 3D performance, as well as others. I understand that a score of 8000 on 3dMark2001 versus a score of 4000, does NOT mean the first card is TWICE as powerful as the second.

The whole point of my post was to share the results of the driver update on the 3dMark2001 score. That is all. Could the new drivers make D3D games run slower? I guess so. I was pleased with the higher SYNTHETIC number. Plus, I was experiencing some visual abnormalties when I played RTCW. The 23.11 fixed that problem.

BFG10K,

What can I say?

I made a harmless post about drivers and 3dMark2001. I got one post that says:

<< good for you... >>

and another that says:

<< Why on earth does everyone care so much about 3DMark? I just can't understand the joy everyone gets when they see their score increase by 50 points. >>

What is the point of BOTH of those posts? They certainly weren't "Hey, cool!" or "Wow, I really did not experience any measurable improvements..." What is the point?

Do you benchmark on your computer? Say 3dMark2001 or Sandra?

I'll be honest. When I try a new driver, I dont test 3Dmark at all. I'll usually test Q3, Serious Sam, and UT (in D3D). BTW, what is that visual glitch in RTCW? What driver version causes it? I've been playing it and want to check it out and see if I can see it.

Det 21.83 was the last Drivers installed.

The glitch was when I used the "rocket launcher" and the rocket hit an enemy. When it hit the enemy it would make a pattern of numbers instead of an explosion. It was really weird, I would go to shoot a Super Soldier with a rocket and a pattern of numbers pops up instead of a fire ball or smoke.

I love RTCW! What a fanastic game. I am playing it though for the second time right now.

Heh, I'm pretty slow. I dont have a RL yet. I'm enjoying RTCW quite a bit also. It's fantastic what they did with the Q3 engine. Really nice.

You have a lot to look forward to. The only reason I am finished is that fact that I have a couple weeks off from work (teacher). Wait until you get the venom gun!!!
