doing a new build, was just wondering if it's better to plug case fans into the motherboard itself or the power supply? any reason it's better to do one or the other?
I plug mine into the motherboard so I can monitor speeds (some can be controlled as well). I heard it's a bad idea if you're overclocking since the motherboard already has enough going on that it would be best to keep the fans on the power supply.
My add-on Yate Loons come with 4 pin molex plugs so the choice is easy. They also have the 3pin mobo plugs, but I agree that the mobo has enough to do.
I have all the fans in my machine going to fan controllers. Not only does this allow the obvious speed control of the fan, but also, if the fan isn't working, the LED for that fan doesn't work either, so it is also a kind of status monitor.
I run my fans off the motherboard's fan headers. It allows me to control my CPU and exhaust fans in relation to CPU and system temp; much better control then any manual fan controller. I also think it makes for easier and cleaner install.
As long as you don't overload the fan headers using excessively powerful fans there is no reason to not run them off the motherboard.
