This will be a dedicated digital video/NLE editing machine and the first priority is stability, second is power.
I do NOT need raid onboard. I don't want onboard video or sound or nic, but if a good board has them, stability and lack of conflicts after disabling is a priority.
Will be using 1 gig of memory (possibly reg ecc), in case that matters.

Thanks

oh yeah, what processors will give the most bang for the buck?

edit: cannot have VIA chipset

Tyan K7X Tiger sounds like the board for you.

As for the CPU well, Im not sure, can people use XP's in dual mode? I seem to remember something about that. Anyways, the 1.2 MP retail can be had for $70 right now, while the 2000 MP is about $150.

Are you talking about the Thunder K7X, or
the Tiger MPX ?
Thanks.

running one myself. (S2466n-4m, has 4X33 pci and onboard 3com LAN, 2X66 pci)

Yes, you can use AMD XP as MP. find CPU that are with L5 (one of the end of the 4 bridge of L5) closed or close it with the defrog kit. (i have one factory closed, one have to do it myself)

Tyan is a good brand for stable.

just make sure you are using a good power supply.

why don't you wait a little bit and see if the 333MHz FSB MP chips are going to come out with the new 762 chipset?

Any idea when that might happen?

At least a month or 2 away. The 333fsb cpu's are still hard to find, and they just did come out with the MP 2400+.

But all the 760MPX boards I have seen reviewed are all within each other it terms of stability and performance. The thing to look for is what you want to be on-board. I am running 2 Athlon XP 1600+'s on a Chaintech 760MPX board. It has Raid, usb2.0, and 2ch sound on-board so that is what I wanted. Some have ethernet some have better sound, etc... And I am running 768mgs of Reg. ECC crucial DDR

So choose by price and options, as the chipset is the same.

And AMD is the only people making a Dual Athlon board so no VIA, serverworks, etc...

As far as CPU's go get something between 1700+ and 2100+. I know you can get a Reatil 1700+ XP from newegg.com for $63. So thats a CPU and a heatsink.

I love my Tyan Tiger MP (S2460). Extremely stable with my (2) Athlon XP 1600+ processers and Corsair PC2100 registered memory.

I have heard good things about the Asus A7M266-D
Tyan Tiger MPX
and MSI K7D Master

all AMD chipsets.
I'd get the MSI myself if I had the choice.. I know a guy personally that has it, and I really like how it runs.. no probs at all.

I am going to definitely put an SMP rig in this house sometime not far away.
