can someone recommend a good monitor with good black color?
the cheap $100 Asus monitor i got has terrible black. it's not black, it's more like grey and the white LED is bleeding in from the sides.

im building a smartmirror as you can see here
smartm.jpg

text is white for it to shine through the 2 way mirror.
the background has to be black or super dark for the mirror to act like a "normal" mirror.

admin, can you move this to Displays? thanks!

im willing to spend max $200.
are you saying IPS gives best black?
reading this article, i got the impression that VA is best:

now im confused.
is there a particular model you would recommend? thanks!

Well, VA has color shifting issues, and I don't think it would be good for a 'mirror' as you were saying, unless you will never look at it from different angles?

A 8 or 10bit IPS panel is going to cost much more than $200.
Take a look at these http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/s-ips-lcd-list.php
You can also try the selector from here http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/specs.htm
You want a high contrast ratio, but, beware of the marketing ploy of exaggerating the contrast ratio, and check the monitor's gamut as well.

Maybe someone else has a better solution for what you are trying to achieve.

VA has the deepest blacks, but looking at it from an angle will produce colour shift. IPS is excellent for looking at off angles, but doesn't have the deepest blacks.

If you want an IPS with deep blacks it does exist, My 2014 MacBook Pro that I'm typing on right now produces nice deep blacks. It doesn't have blue tint or grey tint, it looks pure deep black. I have had good luck with Dell Ultrasharp Monitors for quality IPS panels that produce good deep blacks.
