I am getting: "Unable to Add Workstation to Domain: 'A Domain Controller for Your Domain Could Not Be Contacted'"

Network setup:

-One NT 4.0 Server running as the domain controller with logon scripts for the
workstations.

-A dozen workstations "logged" into the domain, on the server. Most of them
are Win98 or ME, but a few new ones are Win2k and that's where the problem is. They (new Win2kpro machines) are the ones getting the above mentioned error.

Probably missing some vital info... please ask and I will try and supply.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you added a LMHOSTS file to the Win2K workstations or setup their WINS to point to the NT domain? Sounds like it's a name resolution problem. (Man I miss the days of IPX.. Name resolution was so simple back then!)

did you manually enter the computer accounts into the domain? i know in NT you have to enter the computers to the domain manually sometimes. also try pulling the name out of the domain and re entering it. works where i work!

Thanks for the quick reponses.

I`ll try your suggestions and let ya's know how it goes.

On a side note:

My friend is considering upgrading the IBM Netfinity 5000 server (in this scenario, I mentioned above) to Win2k Small Biz.

What would be involved in this and what would the best way to tackle?

No simple upgrade process? ;)

Thanks!

Migrating from NT4 domain to W2K domain is a big deal. Migrating one server from NT4 to W2K is not bad.

Workstations:
W2K depends on DNS for everything. Make sure the W2K clients can reach a DNS server that can tell them where a (P)DC is.

Well, since Garion didn't check in:

go to \winnt\system32\etc\drivers
notepad lmhosts
Following the format there, insert records for other workstations, and especially the PDC.
