i know, that should leave me with plenty of options.

well, let's boil it down further
1) ATT or Tmobile as carrier
2) Cheap: i don't need state of the art phone, just one with a decent size screen to view google map.
3) don't care about brand, could be nokia, sony ericsson, LG, blackberry, samsung...

so, what are my options?

1: ATT or tmobile (you can unlock it)
2: $99 refurb or $199 new, has a 3.5" screen and has built in google maps
3: apple iphone (you knew it was coming haha)

it has a 3.5" screen so google maps looks fantastic on it. also it has pretty intuitive multitouch controls too. hands down one of the best phones ive ever used (dont have one, but my dad, bro, and his wife do).

Iphone would work, or any blackberry. Google maps is a bit slicker on the iphone due to the touch controls but it works great on the blackberries as well if you don't want to be a sheep... er I mean don't want an iphone.

YAY no picture messaging, locked down hardware, Apple not allowing great potential apps just to make them themselves to make money, supporting the worst Monopoly we have seen in a long time. Great way to go.

so zerocool84 and gorcorps, what are the other choices you two are suggesting?

notice I did left out Apple in my "brand selection" criteria.

I agree with gorcorps - IMO the iPhone implements Google Maps best. Followed by the T-Mobile G1. Followed by the more recent blackberries. Followed by the Symbian based phones from Nokia with large screens such as the N95/N96. Followed by Window's Mobile phones such as the Omnia. And I've spent a bunch of time using the iPhone, the G1, a Nokia N95 and several of the newer blackberries including the Blackberry Curve, and also I've spent 30 minutes or so playing with an Omnia.

Andy, the iPhone is my best recommendation, but since you seem to not like that, I'd recommend looking at a T-Mobile G1. Next, take a look at a Blackberry Bold, followed by the Curve 8310. Next, if your definition of cheap goes as high as $300, look at a Nokia N95.

There are plenty of reasons not to buy an iPhone you mentioned a lot of them zerocool. I don't disagree with them - well, except the monopoly one. But it's worth mentioning that hacking your iPhone resolves a bunch of these - and some statistics estimate that as many as 40% of all iPhone 2G's have been hacked so it's not like this is a really rare procedure done by a few people.

You can add in picture messaging using SwirlyMMS or Flutter for iPhones. Flutter is free, but not all that great. Swirly rocks, but requires a hacked iPhone and isn't free. http://www.appleiphoneapps.com...utter-real-iphone-mms/

You can unlock both 3G and 2G iPhones - there are several GUI driven applications to choose from and the risk of an issue that kills your phone is pretty much nil in the case of 2G phones, but a bit riskier with 3G iPhones. Or you can buy a SIM adapter for about $20 on Ebay.

If you hack/jailbreak your phone, you can choose any app you want to install.

The worst monopoly we've seen in a long time? Worse than the oligarchy of the oil industry - and yet we all fill up our cars with gasoline or diesel? Worse than the diamond cartel - and yet nearly all married guys have bought diamonds? Apple has a 57% marketshare of music downloads and no marketshare at all in subscription music services (from 2008 data). In the computer business, Apple with 9% market share is more of a monopoly than Microsoft with 88% (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/01/02...west-since-tracking/)? How exactly is Apple the worst monopoly in a long time? I can think of vastly worse monopolies than Apple that exist today - ones that actually have made the world a worse place by their very existence.

PM, thanks for your honest opinion, I guess it all will come to down to cost: if the Iphone cost more than the G1, I probably will go with the "sheepish" iphone.

Iphones new cost $199 and $299 for 8gig and 16gig respectively. Both models are $100 less if you get them as a refurb. The G1 costs $180 and I haven't seen a refurb on T-mobile's website.

That or a Symbian based phone like the N95/N96/N85/N82.

And please buy a non branded phone. AT&T's pathetic policy of charging $30 for internet for "smartphones/PDAs" can suck dick. They can take my N82 shoved up their asses.

woot? pls elaborate. Off Branded = Non-ATT "standard issue" / branded phones?
or Off Brand = non BlackBerry? and the $30 is a one time deal? or per month? or part of the data plan?

Aren't those prices with three year plan?

Off branded = go on ebay or amazon or any other site that sells phones and pop your AT&T / T-Mobile sim inside. If you get a Blackberry, go through AT&T, but any other phone? Screw it. Also go to some AT&T Authorized dealer like an Asian place. If you tell them you want no phone and you're getting your own they can just give you a rebate. Or if they have decent phones you can grab an unlocked phone.

1) I hate AT&T bloatware. This is like building your computer vs buying one with HP preinstalled
2) Unlocked phones FTW.
3) More selection out there. Just like building your computer, you get to select your own parts.
3) AT&T makes you charge $30/month for "PDA/smartphones." My gf refused to pay $30/month for a stupid LG Incite and got charged $199 to upgrade. So you gotta buy their data plan or you get no good phone deal? Lame. Oh and it's $15/month for any other phone. The plan is the same. For those of you confused with 3G costing more because the 3G iPhone costs more, AT&T is just doing that because it feels like it. Paying $15/month gets you the SAME connection, SAME network, SAME everything. Check on HowardForums because most people pay $15/month there.
4) AT&T Navigator costs money? Pshhh. Nokia maps is FREE. Throw in Garmin Mobile XT and you don't have to pay for navigation (just the software).
