Plinking optics...

OK AT shooters, I'm curious as to what everyone uses for rimfire optics. I've got a boy who be 'learnin the iron' soon, and I want to get prepared now as I have a shopping spree upcoming. Iron sights will come first of course, but I want to dedicate one particular 10/22 to optics that isn't a long ass Simmons.

I have experience with standard scopes, currently have a few mounted on a carbine and a lever action .22Mag, but I was hoping to get some recommendations on red dots and sighting systems. Don't want to spend too much, say under $200 - anyone know of any good buys? Picatinny is preferable too, magnification would be nice but not a deal breaker for a sweet buy.

I've checked out other forums of course, I'd just like to add AT opinions to my list of considerations. Good experiences and horror stories equally welcome.

I got a cheap no-name scope from walmart. It does well enough at 100 yards.

Yeah, honestly most stuff off the shelf will be fine for plinking. Just a 3-9x Bushnell or something would be fine scope wise. If you REALLY want something top shelf though, Nikon makes a line of scopes for specific purposes/calibers. This is their rimfire one: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-ProStaff...rimfire+scopes

Red dots are similar but you don't want to go TOO cheap here. The ones in the 50-75 dollar range will work fine for what you're using it for. If you go too cheap then you run the risk of glass that doesn't seat well, and over time it'll get loose which means it's worthless. I would avoid Ncstar brand though. Truglo makes some alright stuff for the price.

Mil dot, illuminated, you can adjust it by hand, and the caps are built in, which is nice. Decent optics. Not a $300+ quality, but good.

All depends on what is being plinked and at what distance. 50 yards 1" target dots would be a different recommendation than soda cans at 20 yards. Red dots provide faster acquisition on targets that can be normally seen easily. For hard to see small targets a 3-9x scope should be fine for most work to 50 yards.

For a 10/22 anything will work just fine. I have a BSA Sweet 22 (3-9) and it works just fine. Can be picked up for ~50-70 bucks. I did just order a Mueller 4-16 but havent gotten to take it out yet. Its well recommended too for 22 rifles.
