Plextor won't burn DVDs at 8x

I have some Memorex DVD-Rs rated for 8x, and I have the Plextor 16x DVDRW (external), but every time I try to burn at 8x, Nero says Plextor queue again later or some other error, but it will burn them at 4x.

I'm going to try different discs, but could I have a bad burner?

what model number? i've read that there was a certain plextor model that was crap.
and have you tried updating your firmware?

What model number exactly? And yes do you hav the newest firmware.

Do you use alcohol 120% or dvd decrypter at all? these programs will read your media and let you know min and max burn speeds, even though they might be rated at 8x and so on.

Also memorex isnt the best media out there, they dont produce there own media themselves so they are very inconsistant.

Have you had this issue with any other media?

The model number is PX-716UF. I've updated to the latest firmware, and it'll burn Memorex CDR's at 48X...I'll try the DVD Decryptor reader, thanks.

Hmmm, using PlexTools professional, the DVD will burn at 8x, but Nero won't do it unless it's at 4x...?

its a media/plextor prob

Plextors like T02's - TayoYuden +R (www.rima.com or fujifilm 8X+R Japan)

The "model number" talked about is the TLA number - should be 0202 on info sticker or higher - dont know where it is displayed on externals

You need to d/l Nero CD Speed 3.61 at www.majorgeeks.com (among others)

Also in Nero, if you click the player icon near the drive window, you can uncheck reg rec and uncheck auto in advanced tab

I tried Nero CD-DVD Speed, it burned one of the DVDs and said it average 7.56x successfully. I'm going to Best Buy to get some different DVD-Rs.
