Actually this is the SECOND best SCSI CDrom, the best being the
Plextor UltraPlex 40Max (NOT wide). The NOT wide drives (at least those
made in the past year and half or so) use a different BIOS chip
than the wide model, and do much faster audio extraction. The wide
model maxes out at 24x DAE (it maxes out at that level very quickly,
so the average over the entire disc is around 22x--not too shabby).
The Max gets faster and faster as you approach the end of the disc,
and actually EXCEEDS 40x DAE near the end of the disc (for longer
discs). It is, hands down, the best CDrom you can buy.

But this drive isn't bad.

I personally have a bunch of these wide drives sitting around, but
instead chose to pay Dell $15 for a 50->68 pin adaptor to use one
of my non-wide ultraplex drives in my latest build.

Hypermicro is very good. I've bought several SCSI peripherals from them (Plextor UltraPlex 40X, Tekram DC390U2W, Quantum Atlas 10K, assorted cables, etc). You can get free shipping if you mention a popular review site (not Anandtech).

I have never seen a 40x MAX for sale. I will have to start looking for that. Right now I have an UltraPlex 32x.

Hyper Micro offers free shipping. That is nice. Now to find which review site.

Thanks for the info.

If you already have the 32x max, I am not sure I would bother upgrading
to the 40x wide...Performance difference isn't that substantial...

I actually have a 40Max (not wide) SCSI drive that I almost never use, as I rarely do audio extraction. If someone here wants to buy it, I will sell it for $60. I also have the Plextor Manager 2000 software.

I love my Ultraplex 40xmax drive, which I bought for around $100 a couple of years back. It reads discs that other cdroms don't read. not only that, but it's pretty fast. I highly recommend it.

So Kwad...suppose I don't care for audio extraction as much as everything else a CD drive can do, like a 40 burst opposed to 20 burst...for example, I have a number of programs that take up most of a disc and would like a faster install. Is the SCSI-2 version gonna beat this drive?
