Plextor RMA replaced my PX-716SA with PX755SA

My 716SA died badly after about a year.

Plextor was great about the RMA and quickly returned me a 'new' 755SA.

Should I be happy??? Its a newer supposedly faster drive in some respects according to some reviews I read. It seems the 716 drives are getting a bad reputation so perhaps the 755 will have a longer life expectancy. But...

The two reasons I was willing to pay over 3x the price for the Plextor originally was:
1. SATA

2. 8MB buffer

The 755SA has only a 2MB buffer, which bumbs me out, and the 716SA is still more expensive, but not buy much.

Was this an upgrade, a downgrade or a wash??? I'm not sure I should complain to Plextor or not.

Looking for some feedback and advice. THX!

If they still make it they should give you the same model unit back, You were screwed on the 8MB Buffer. I would call and request a new 716.

thnx for the respnses I guess my only concern is they gave me the 755SA because they know the 716 is a dog, but don't want to offficially admit it. I don't want to be caught out of warranty with a dead drive in a year...

Cheers!

The 716A/SA are not dogs - the very first production of the 716A had some problems that were worked out before the SA came along. The 716SA is just a 716A with a SATA bridge chip. Just pop the latest firmware on it.

The 755SA is based on the Sanyo chip as are all of the top Plextor burners. So ALL Plextor software is supported including Plextools Pro. As of the 1.02 firmware, the 755SA was still fairly media sensitive. Check the review at http://www.cdrinfo.com so you are sure to buy media that works well with it. And keep up with your firmware updates (latest for the 755 is v.1.05) for further media handling improvements.

I'd be quite happy with a new 755SA. SATA controller channels should be independent so a large buffer shouldn't be necessary.

You're lucky .

After working and testing at least 200 or 300 Plextors ... and a lot of 716s ... I can tell you right now that Plextor drives are living based on the old fame ... because now they are simply LOW QUALITY .

The drive you've got may be A LOT BETTER ... ever since last autumn ... Plextor started using the same hardware as the BENQ drives and BENQ drives are currently the best .

So ... the drive you've got is probably A LOT BETTER than the 716 .

Aha ... well ... they are not using the Philips Nexperia chipset ? ...

I don;t know about the SANYO chipset but ... the old 716 was horrible

Only one Plextor was based on the Phillips (Benq 1640) design and it is no longer being produced though there are still some in the channel. It was the PX-740A. There is also one on the Panasonic/Hitachi that can handle DVD-RAM but it is one of the worst Plextors in a long time - the PX-750A I think.

That's like people buying PC P&C PSU calling people buying SeaSonic wannabe cheap bastards, and people buying Enhance low life homeless who wish they got the money to buy PC P&C and Zippy PSU.

Have you owned or tried DVD writers by BenQ, NEC, Lite-On? No? Then educate yourself by reading the club.cdfreaks.com forums, you arrogant prick. Just 'cause a Plextor costs three times as much as the other DVD writers doesn't mean it's three times better. Just as a C2D X6800 is not four times better than a C2D E6400, even though that's what the price difference suggests.:|

IMHO ... I think it's obvious this is not a subjective affirmation but an objetive one .

They were better a long time ago ... now ... they are crap ... and ugh ... the failure rate is HUGE ... almost 25% from what our store chain sells .

The retail managers still bring it because people desire it so much based on old fame .

Us , the service enginiers , we hate it because they fail so often and it's not fixable by FirmWARE or electrical intervention on the PCB .
