Plextor refuses to co-operate! Edit: Yep, it's dead.

Update: Got "confirmation" from Plextor that my drive is defective. RMA department replied within two hours :Q Let's hope rest of the procedure goes as smoothly...

My three months old Plextor PlexWriter 16/10/40A pretends to be dead, I refuse to believe it really is.

Problem is that it wont read or write any kind of media. I've tried at least 10 different types of media - commercial cd's, self-made cd-r's and blank cd-r's - refused to read/write any of them.

I've tried changing it to Primary Slave, Secondary Master and Secondary Slave. I tried with another IDE cable. I tried removing my DVD drive - 'cause I thought it might like to be alone for a while... I removed it from System and re-installed... I updated the firmware. BIOS recognizes it, Winduh says "fsck you man, that drive does work! You're the one that doesnt work!".

I've already emailed Plextor support, but I thought to see if anyone here can suggest anything else I could try.

Thanks in advance!

The same thing happened to me some months back. Try setting it up as normal and see if the led blinks. You can then go to this site...

Plextor blink codes

...to see what the problem is. My drive is currently vacationing in sunny California until Plextor deigns to send me a replacement.

Hmm.. why didnt I spot that blink code page 😱 Thanks KommissarHorizon! ...and what the h3ll is amber? 😀 Never heard of such color, does it mean orange or something similar?

Anyways, 2 amber blinks...

<< If you still get blinking LED lights after going through the troubleshooting process your drive is most likely defective. >>

%#¤%&#" I thought Plextor drives are quality stuff 🙁 😉

Oh well... RMA calls.

Funny, that's the same problem I had! Hmmmmmmm.......

Plextor tech support/RMA department sucks....

I had to RMA a UltraPlex 40X last year and I can never get through by telephone, email and fax received no response.

After this incident, I will never buy a "new" Plextor again (Just used ones if the is right 🙂 ).

PS. Sorry about the rant, but they really pissed me off :|

I had the same problem about a month ago. I e-mailed the RMA form to plextor and they got back to me on the same day. After shipping the dead drive to them via UPS ground, it was about 15 days before I received a new drive.

Overall, I thought their RMA department was fine. If only the drive hadn't failed in the first place....:frown:

I know, thus only one curse word an no angry emoticon 🙂 I'm not really pissed off, I know this happens.

Hope my RMA goes ok... gotta get the receipt from the office tomorrow so I can get the form filled.
