For anyone who was afraid to buy this drive because of the price or availability of 8X media, there is good news. Apparently it seems to burn most 4X media at 8X. Suggest you read the review. Considering how inexpensive other DVD burners have gotten it's still a little pricey. But if you want to burn disc in 8 minutes this is what you need.

Since the media is still relatively expensive, I'd probably use RW alot. What's the status of faster RW writing?

I've been thinkin' about getting a DVD burner for sometime now. I want to put all my Family VHS movies I made years ago on DVD. This does look like a really nice burner. hmmmm...decisions,decisions.....

I just got a sony dru 510a and notice a couple of issues:
1. Doesn't seem to read dvds faster than 2x
2. Doesn't recognize my 90 min cd-rs

Wonder how the plextor does with these issues.. wonder how long it'll take lite-on to do it better and cheaper

It's the same story as when they released their 8x CD-R many years ago. I had an extremely hard time finding reliable media, not to mention software that would work at 8x. I have a 2.4X right now and want the 8X, but definately would suggest checking that your personal burning software supports it. Good deal though, mmmm. ;)

You can all thank me for the recent price drops on 4X drives and what will surly be a rapid price decline in 8X drives over the next couple of weeks. It never fails...as soon as I buy a drive, the prices fall precipitously a week later ;-)
