I just purchased this new Plextor PX-716SA (SATA) DVD Dual Layer Burner to replace my LiteOn CDRW (IDE) Burner.

After removing the IDE CDRW Burner, I installed the SATA DVD Burner.
I have SATA enabled in the bios, and in Windows XP under Device Manager the SATA controllers are listed ok. Once the SATA burner is connected though and I boot the PC, Windows locks up.

My hard drives are IDE. This is my first SATA device.

Please help.

Can you just check that the problem with locking up goes away when you disconnect the sata drive.

Also, where does it get to in the boot process when it locks up?
And, can you boot into safe mode?

Have you updated the BIOS? It could be a compatibility issue. Why did you choose a SATA DVDRW? Plextor is quite expensive

Yea, I loaded the latest bios available from MSI.
I FINALLY got a reply back (4 days) from Plextor, they said that SATA Optical drives are not supported by alot of SATA motherboards right now.
Hopefully MSI will have a bios update at some point, otherwise its back to IDE!

SATA optical drives don't have a big advantage right now, besides that they use smaller cables. Stick with cheap ATA-133 or -100 drives

Plextor Technical Support was kind enough to replace my SATA drive with the IDE version.
