New Egg has a sale going: $126 for the beige unit and $129 for the black unit. But it gets better.....as there is a $30 mail in rebate for either unit bringing the price to $96 and $99 respectively. And.....free FedEx Saver shipping.

These are both retail versions of the product.....not OEM.

**Also, don't forget to order your free DVD-R 5-pack (Combo Special) that is available with either unit**

No. Plextor hardly wanted to give 8x DVD-R support to the 708a. Plextor fights with their customers on every aspect.

Plextor, overpriced and behind the curve.

i love plextor but i wont go for it unless i can burn 1x media at 8x like i do with my hacked nec 2500a and pioneer dvr107

i burn so many dvd's for me to get a burner, i want it to burn 1x media at faster speed like 4, 6, or 8x

can the plextor do that? or any hacked firmware that does this?

This is NOT hot. I have a Plextor and they aren't the same quality they used to be. Anything over $100 for a DVD burner is not a great deal. Also, this thing doesn't burn the new dual format.

Yea... I'll stick with my Lite-On that burns all protections and media at a fraction of the cost.

When Plextor initially stopped making SCSI drives, I think 40x reader, was when they started downhill. Now, I think they're just rebadged NEC drives, and still carry the pricing they did when they were top shelf.

I can't imagine why anyone would look away from Lite-On. They Are old-school Plextor quality, at bargain prices.

nice find. I have the 708A and I paid $200 for mine. excellent deal

I have a PX708A and although it burns well I think Lite-On and other companies make quite comperable products. Would i do it again? Probably not.

I read a thread before at CDRLabs about "worst DVD burner you ever owned" and there were a lot of votes for LiteOns, although of course those were just opinions. Looking at the new LiteOn SOHW-1213S though, every review I've read has been bad. Bought one before I saw reviews and regretted it; my personal experience mirrored the reviews I've found. In 2 days, I had more data errors & coasters than I have in about 8 years/3 DVD burners total, even after 2 firmware upgrades on the LiteOn. Hopefully future LiteOn/hacked firmware can fix it, but since I bought it at Costco it's going back & I'll pick up a Pioneer 108 or NEC 3500a.

Nice deal, 712 is not a bad drive, there are certain quirks with combination of hardware/firmware but IMO their drives are still better than anyone elses. I bet none of you guys read liteon woes on cdrlabs forums where ppl had liteon cd burners fail every three months, after that I'm not much of a liteon lover... Check out burn tests on cd/dvd review sites, in general plextor outbeats every one of them. And for only $30 more than NEC2510 it's a sweet deal. Who cares for dual-layer media when it costs $5 a piece and burn quality of the second layer is plain horrible.

PS as far as I can remember plextor always used to offer MIR on older model drives when it was about to put out a new model on the market. There have been no official word from plextor on its new model, but this may be a sign that plextor is ready, besides it's time already for a new model...
