Plextor M5S on SATA 3Gbps

Hi guys,

I've been reading reviews lately and noticed this new SSD to have very good random read/write performance. Also checked with my favorite shop and they already have them in stock and they're cheaper than Samsung 830. Is this a good drive for use in an older system (X58+ICH10R)? I figured that sequential read/write will be significantly slower, but what about random access performance? Is it limited only by 3Gbps SATA transfer rate or is there something else involved? The SSDs surely are complicated beasts. I just can't wrap my head around them.

If you can get it cheaper than a Samsung 830, go for it.

You are right that seq speeds will take a hit, but the real performance improvement of a SSD is in the random read/writes. That is what really makes a SDD "feel" fast.

And those random read/writes aren't high enough to be affected by using SATA II, so go for it, you will still get probably 90-95% of the benefits of the SSD even with SATA II. Your STR speeds will be lower on benchmark software, but in real life, you will probably never notice the difference.

M5S is a very good drive, it's the newer version of the M3S (which would be great to get as well, it performs about the same as the M5S and has a 5year warranty versus the M5s 3year).

^ looked at the M3S and the 256GB model is significantly more expensive than M5S, to the point of being unaffordable. Isn't the waiting game fun - I was about to pull the trigger on a Crucial M4, but then I thought it was available for a long time and something better should come out soon and bam - Plextor M5 series appears.

The M3 uses more expensive Nand chips and has a 5 year warranty, thus the higher price. I hope the M5P prices goes down for Black Friday sales.
