Plextor DVD drive help

I have a Plextor DVD writer model 716sa and recently when I've tried to run a cd/dvd from the drive or even click the eject button, my whole computer freezes up. It used to run perfectly but now something seems to have gone haywire. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a DFI motherboard with an AMD 4000+ cpu.
