Has anyone encountered this problem and/or do you think my drive is bad????

I have a 12/10/32 ATAPI Plextor drive. It was working fine, I was able to read and burn CDs. But then something happened. Now, when I put a CD in the drive, as it spins up the drive to read it, it gives me a Fatal Windows Error and crashes my system. I can take the same CD and put it into my read-only drive and access it fine.

The Plextor is on the same IDE as my other CD-ROM, so I tried changing it to a separate one, but it made no difference, it still crashed my system. I had the Plextor as the Master so I switched it to the Slave but again, it made no difference.

I even tried installing the latest firmware from Plextor. Again, it made no difference, my system will crash as soon as I put a CD in the Plextor drive.

I bought the drive from buy.com a while back, but I don't have any of the original packing or box so I can't return it. I am about ready to send it back to Plextor.

This is driving me crazy!!! I sent a note to tech support at Plextor but haven't heard back from them yet. Can anyone offer some help or suggestions?

Aaarrgghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If its a burner then theres no reason why windows needs to auto-detect it, System Properties > Device Manager > CD-ROMS > Plextor > Settings > Auto Insert Notification == 0

You can simply open your burning software and select the type/etc, no reason to have windows do it.
