plextor cdr weirdness... help!

Plextor 12x ide secondary master
Lighton dvd ide primary master
on gateway 6400 with 574 MB ram
WinXP (with all latest updates...)

here's the problem...
everytime I try to burn something, the burn indicator blinks for like 2 seconds and just stops. It gives me no errors what so ever, the light just drops backs to green. Same thing happens when I do test burn, it just blinks for couple seconds and just stops. Nero, EZ CD creator give me no errors, the progress bar just stops and it continues to count. Dosen't matter what CDR I use, I've tried Imation, PNY, TDK cds with the same results.

I've tried changing the cdr to primary master, disabled/enabled winxp burning service, REinstalled ASPI drivers (which according to aspichk report ok) but no luck, now i'm all out of ideas... I'm going to call plextor tech support tomorrow when I get back from classes but figured I'd ask here first.

I had a similar problem with my Plextor 12/10/32. After much troubleshooting, and over an hour on the phone with Microsoft tech support, I discovered the problem myself: XP turned DMA mode on by default for the drive, and the Plextor didn't like it. Changed the transfer mode to PIO Only, and all the problems went away with no noticeable decrease in performance.

WOAH that actually worked thanks! weird thou my dma had been on since like forever and it decides to not like it now? oh well atleast it works now. thanks!

If you just installed the recently released CDR compatibility update from Microsoft, that could be the problem. (The one that came out in the last week or so, not the older one) It's broken Nero and some other programs for a bunch of us.
