So instead of a Lite-On CD-RW and a Lite-On DVD-ROM for the price of a Plextor CD-RW, you can now get a Plextor DVD-ROM and a Plextor CD-RW for the price of a DVD-/+R??

Only a couple years late on the DVD drive. Better late than never I guess. A bit more interesting is the USB 2.0 flash memory drives that were mentioned at the end of the press release.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what the prices are. And your're right again, they are a bit behind the curve on this and it doesn't make sense to put out a CD-ROM drive now - I know I wouldn't buy a single-purpose player. So I'm guessing the DVD-ROM drive will be the far better seller. But some people would be glad to be able to buy and Plextor IDE player as there is great brand loyalty with Plextor. Old slow Plextor SCSI burners will still bring good prices on the used market I could buy two LiteOn et al (after rebate) for what I could sell mine for and it's still running strong after 3 or 4 years of use.

Umm..because CD-ROMs are still selling? DOH!

It will be a couple years before DVD-ROM sales surpass CD-ROM sales, it will be several years before the DVD replaces the CD. Sales of DVD players only recently outpaced VCR sales for the first time. That means quarterly units sold, not the established base. It will be several years yet before there are as many DVD players in US homes as VCRs.

When a 'new' thing comes out, it does not immediately render the 'old' thing unmarketable, unprofitable, or unusable. As long as there is money to be made in the market, it makes perfect sense to release a product in that market, especially when you have brand recognition like Plextor.
