Plextor 8/4/32 takes a looong time to begin reading

My Plextor takes at least 11 seconds from the time a CD is in the drive, to the time when I hear the motor begin to start up. If the CD is autoplay, it takes another 5-10 seconds to start up. What's the problem? The sheap 24x CD in my old computer only took about 3-5 seconds to begin reading. Thanks to all who help

Do you have auto insert notification checked in device manager?

I have the same issue with my toshiba 12x dvdrom and my hp 4x4x/24x cdrw
Auto insert notification off for both.

It doesn't have anything to do with auto-insert notification. No matter the CD, it takes about 11 seconds from when I insert a CD to when I hear the motor just start up. For the same action, my old 24x did it in about 3 seconds.

It may have to wait on a start command from your scsi controller

Go to Plextor's site and update the firmware if you haven't already, that may help.

It's not a SCSI device. I'll try updating the firmware again, even though I have done it before.
