From what I understand limited supplies made it to certain Best Buys across the globe. From what I also understand and read these drives are bunk. Anyone got any news on this particular drive? Kriss, any news? Any reviews coming soon?

I think the first batch of 716A was (or may be) recalled because the first firmware update didn't seem to put a dent in the problems.

I bought one...here's my review:

The Plextor PX-716a is a very beautiful drive. Included in the package was a black faceplate and a piece of 16x media, two things many manufacturers neglect to include. A DL disc was not included. Installation went without a hitch and Windows detected the drive right away. Nero detected the drive also. However, the drive wouldn't detect anything! No matter what I put in it: DVD, CD, burnt, pressed, blank, anything. Took it out and returned it to Best Buy and picked up a Pioneer A08XL. Patched it to >NIL:'s hacked firmware and am now burning 4x media at whatever speed I want.

Pros:
None

Cons:
It simply did not work.

Now if the Cons do not bother you I would say to buy one. But hey, it's your money.

There is a 716 thread in the Hot Deals section with more info and a link that will be enlightening.
