It seems that relatively all of a sudden placing any disk (blank or otherwise) in my plextor drive makes the system hang within 30 seconds (or at the very least explorer goes right to hell).

system specs:
asus nforce4 sli deluxe
winxp sp2

I tried updating the firmware (no luck).

I haven't yet tried updating chipset and bios but I hesitate b/c I get unlucky with such things.

Recently installed software: newest version of winamp and difiler pack

Any help would be appreciated - I'm never dropping the cash on a plextor again.

Check your device driver in Device Manager. Something may have gotten mucked up there

I did an uninstall on the driver and let windows reinstall on reboot. This didn't change anything.

is this really going to help on an SATA drive?

I killed the nvidia IDE and RAID drivers (I basically ditched all things nvidia except networking and video). I rebooted and let windows rediscover my 2 dvd/cd drives and now everything seems fine. Thanks for all of the suggestions - I'm not sure why this fixed it....
