Plextor 708A started producing a lot of errors when writing DVDs (~=3.5GB and up)

Hey everybody,

Just realized that my old and trusty 708A started failing my big time after about two years of light use. Now on burning a DVD I end up with bunch of mistakes towards the end of the recordring (starting somewhere after 3.5GB). Any dvd recording program diligently reports these mistakes... Interesting, though, is that I ran all-in-one tests in plex tools and it did not found any (?)

Does it mean that my 708A just gave up on me and I have to buy a new burner, or I am missing something? I tested it with different media (including that ones that it was working with for sure), update to the latest firmware, but still no joy.

Can you guys give me any advice? other then that it works well

thanks a lot

Do you have another drive that you can test on your system? I'm thinking that your current drive has possibly given up the ghost, but if another drive does the same thing, then your current drive is probably OK.

Two years does seem a little short on lifespan for a Plextor, but it's not unheard of. Maybe I'm just lucky; 5+ years two Plextor CD/RW drives and going on two years on my PX-740A.

Hey, thanks a lot for your help!

I posted on the cd freaks forum and was suggested to test the drive. it did pass. this led to think that it was corrupted data being written to DVD and, consequently, to a software conflicts. i am narrowing the possible cause for it, but it look like it is symantect security suite, in particular the autoprotect feature of its antivirus. Crap!

But, that's a lot maybe it will help someone else
